Central Jersey 107.1 The Boss

Seems like Ross Brittain may be the permanent replacement for Robby as the male morning co-host, as mornings are now listed among his official timeslots. And I thought maybe it was an error, but apparently Ross Brittain is actually on the air all the way from 6 AM to 3 PM on Saturdays, at least for this week. (With Rochelle 6-10 and then solo). Definitely a great choice for the morning show, but I would hope they'd find someone else to do weekend middays, unless he really *wants* to work that much.
Sounds like that Saturday show may be a “best of,” similar to what a lot of other morning shows run on Saturdays. I could be wrong, but that would make more sense if he’s also on 10-3.

Big is a mess. They really went far away from core listener expectations with their musical moves in July. And have paid in the ratings ever since. Adele and Gotye on a Classic Hits station for example? Those songs haven't aged into Classic Hits...yet. Plus rhythmic product post 2000. Boss although evolving and becoming more female friendly just has a better flow.

I heard Shawn Mendes on 107.1. Very weird.

Look at their playlist. They seem to have decided on going in the direction of Adult Contemporary, while including some Classic Hits titles that can easily fit the rest of the library. The only advice I can think of: Get on board or change the station.

It reminds me of certain periods of Ben FM in Philly. Mostly Adult Hits but would throw in some AC/Hot AC currents and recurrents here and there. I feel like the early 2010's they tried this.

Yep. It made me think about BEN-FM as well. It's almost like an AC/Variety Hits hybrid.

It seems like they've more or less reverted back to the sound of Fun 107.1. Not really feeling it. And it's strange that they rebranded with the format change to go with it, only to basically return to the sound of the old format under the newer handle. I don't really get the similarity to BEN, which plays a lot of rockier songs that I wouldn't expect The Boss in its current incarnation to ever touch.

Fun and the Boss are not similar format wise.

Fun was pretty straightforward Hot AC with golds mixed in.

The Boss is pretty straightforward Adult/Classic hits with a few currents/recurrents mixed in. The past "current" the Boss played was Dua Lipa's "Dance The Night" which got a whopping.... 2 spins this week.

Just because both might play a few same titles, it doesn't mean they're the same format.

If anything I would say it's more like an updated version of the Breeze format from around the mid-late 2000s. Mostly in line with what Classic Hits stations play, but with some newer AC stuff thrown in that might appeal to the target demographic. Though granted, The Breeze at the time had a deeper playlist.

The Breeze was great. I remember them having a "no repeat work week" when they were around. You're not going to get that kind of depth or variety on commercial radio in a larger market nowadays.

Trying.... really hard to be nice about this lol. I've always had a love/hate relationship with Greg T when he was on the morning zoo because I always thought he was too old to be doing immature, pranks, and stupid bits although some were unforgettable and funny... and sometimes his voice is like raspy nails on a chalkboard. When he left the zoo to go co-host the KTU morning show with Carolina, I found Elvis' show more enjoyable again. One less crowded voice. One less immature bit.

Well, I've been listening to The Boss since it's inception.. I question a lot of the evolving musical journeys their playlist is taking us on. (for example they just closed out The Morning Show with *NSYNC it's gonna be me, followed into Guns N' Roses. Like a bipolar shuffle on Spotify...)

I like Rochelle and I think she adds a breath of fresh air to the mornings... it's really crappy what happened with her in regard to Robbie. I grew up listening to Ross and I thought those two would have been the perfect pair for the mornings. As I listen this morning to her and Greg T (unfairly titling the show with his name first), I found it uncomfortable to listen to. It's cool that he admitted it was a little rocky or rough for him this morning and all that banter and stuff but... I just don't know.

Am I the only one who is not feeling it?

I agree. Ross and Rachel would have been great. (Play off of Friends too) But before we all pass judgment, let's give these two at least a week together before passing judgment.

For what it's worth, they've taken down the Robby & Rochelle page, but not the listing for the show. And Rochelle's bio image still lists her as Robby's wife (which I guess is technically still true). Robby is a great talent and really made this station shine - I do wish him well, and hope his successor as PD will keep the retro top 40 personality approach. Musically speaking, I also think leaning into the pop/AC side of things is a wise way to move the Classic Hits format forward chronologically, rather than diving more into hip-hop and edgier rock/alternative like Philly's Big 98.1. My personal tastes lean more towards the latter categories, but it feels jarring hearing that stuff next to a lot of the more standard Classic Hits fare (especially what's left of the '70s), and takes away from the work-friendly aspect of the format. The playlist selection on The Boss also seems to have a better flow to it compared to Big.
The cluster make up is totally different than the Beasley makeup in Philly where you have AC, Hot AC, and Classic Hits. OGL has tried to move in a more rhythmic direction but it has not been accepted by their P1 Classic Hits listeners. And having an AC...B 101..as a cluster mate, OGL has to be careful not to cannibalize from that station. Boss has no concerns and can lean their station any way they want to and nobody in the same building will be impacted.

Anyone else notice a musical shift on The Boss lately? I had it on earlier and heard a lot more alternative pop type stuff. One set had “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers, and “We Are Young” in a row.

Looks like there are still some occasional rhythmic hits, but it seems to lack focus. Or someone isn’t massaging the logs.
