Central Jersey 107.1 The Boss

Anyone else notice a musical shift on The Boss lately? I had it on earlier and heard a lot more alternative pop type stuff. One set had “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers, and “We Are Young” in a row.

Looks like there are still some occasional rhythmic hits, but it seems to lack focus. Or someone isn’t massaging the logs.

I still enjoy the station, but it seems to have an identity crisis at the moment. Started as a Classic Rock station, morphed into Rockin' Classic Hits... now it's more Adult Hits but still with Classic Hits imaging and jingles?

Playlist is good to my ears, albeit younger than most Classic Hits stations out there.

After that set of music I posted, 3 of the next 4 songs were from the 80s. If you tune in at different times, it sounds like a different station. Very confusing listen when it used to have an identity.

Sounds like Cities 97.1 in Minneapolis.

Cities spins new music (over 60 spins a week for their Powers). The Boss's "newest" music is recurrent at best, and those titles get spun less than once a day.

The strategy behind the Boss the past couple of years is to basically be a gold version of what WPLJ was. As it pushes further into the 2000s music-wise, that focus becomes clearer as most of what they're playing were PLJ hits.

Are there many Classic Hits stations which actually call themselves "Classic Hits" on the air? I thought that was more of an inside-radio term, like Adult Contemporary. And in this case, calling songs from the mid-2010s "classic" just doesn't seem right to me. Heck, CHR stations still have some songs that old in their rotation!

Some do. Just three off the top of my head:

KJMK- Joplin, MO Classic Hits 93.9 - KJMK - Playing the Greatest Hits of All Time!
KOSF- San Fran- Classic Hits 103.7 - The Bay's Greatest Hits Of The 70s, 80s & 90s
WHTT- Buffalo- WHTT-FM

WMGK in Philly once called themselves Classic Hits on the air, although I shudder to think how long ago that was...probably 1990s and early 2000s.

If they are going from three early 2010s alt-pop songs to three '80s songs, then I think it is indeed that "someone isn't massaging the logs". It seems like they still have a similar range of music (Classic Hits staples mixed with some newer AC gold tracks) to what they had when Robby Bridges was still there, but the categories aren't being mixed as well as they used to. Seems like the overall execution of the programming has taken a hit - I also recently heard what I assume was supposed to be a voicetracked intro over the top-of-hour jingle ramp, but instead the ramp played with nothing over it followed by the voicetrack with nothing under it. Overall the station is definitely lacking the polish it had under Robby, despite all the individual elements being there.
