107-5 ZZQ Update?

Anyone know of any recent news, rumors or possible interest in the powerful 107-5 frequency in Terre Haute, IN?

I remember reading that Indiana State University and Indiana University were both interested, but that news was released back in 01 or 02 and neither institution has made the purchase.

It's not going to be sold. It will either be auctioned by the FCC or granted by comparative hearing as a non-commercial operation. I remember hearing it was going to be reserved for non-commercial, but the FCC's rules for reserving commercial band stations for non-commercial use may have changed since then. I know they've been to court at least once since the requirement for auctions started.

At one time, the interested parties for 107.5 were ISU, IU and WPFR.

Do you mean WPFR,, the old CHR at Power 103-102.7 which went off air in 91 due to financial fundings and bankruptcy, or do you mean the religious station on 93. Something... I cant hear it hear in Martinsville so i dont know... But Power 103 WPFR used to blast a good signal into Matinsville-Bloomington, and even parts of Indianapolis... I was a dj at WZZQ right when they closed down, was given no warning or nothing.. At this time WZZQ was known as Z-107.5 and was flirting with the CHR format... Its ashemed that signal went away, it was a good rock leaned CHR for about a year,, and could be heard well passed Effingham Illinois, and even way past Indianapolis,,,, Farther than that when Tropo would kick in. You could get it way into illinois along I-70 until Z-107.7 Saint Louis squashed it out.... We even had callers as far away as Peoria that listened regularly. I even had DX reports from up around Muncie... ISU I think uses a NON com on the same tower on 88.5, but its only 1kw... We used to run sweepers that said we were the 100,000 watt flamethrower, but I dont think our power was ever over 50kw,, but on a tall tower.

WISU is on 89.7 with 13,500 Watts at 512 feet.

The reason you said you were 100KW but were only 50KW is that taller tower made that 50 the equivalent of 100KW.

I work for an FM thats 30KW at 638 feet, but we call ourselves 50KW.. as the taller tower on a hill makes us a 50KW equivalent and "50KW" sounds better to ad agencies and local clients then 30KW.

If I remember the story correctly, WPFR 102.7 and WPFR 93.9 are technically one in the same. WPFR stands for "Paul Ford Radio" (though they now say they mean "Word Power Family Radio"). He owned the original WPFR at 102.7 and is now doing the religious format on WKZI/WLHW and WPFR 1480/93.9. So, you have two very different formats but the same person. From what I've heard, Ford is through with commercial radio and would do some form of non-commercial radio on 107.5, probably religious.

When I lived at 86th and Township Line Rd in Indy almost 10 years ago, I had no trouble picking up WLEZ.

That was the other station from Terre Haute that I could pick up in Indy. I think it was calling itself "107.5 The Edge" at the time. It was more of a modern rock station. When you worked at 'ZZQ, did you work with my friend Debbie Hunter?

Let's say the FCC starts taking applications for this noncommercial frequency next year. If only one party applies, a CP may
be granted in 12 to 18 months. But since many will apply add a couple more years. Then add a year to build it.

Maybe something will be on 107.5 by 2014.

I happened to meet Paul Ford about a year ago and we swapped WBOW stories. He said he'd love to have 107.5... but, then again, he'd love to have about any frequency he can get! He runs his stations from a studio in his home on US 40 not too far west of the Indiana/Illinois state line.

When I worked at WZZQ (gak, 14 years ago) I was under the impression we ran at 35Kw. About the farthest away I'd get calls was Robinson, IL or Greencastle, IN. Oh yeah, and from the Federal Pen.

Jim, I would pick it up strong in Palestine, IL (7 miles east). Maybe it was the mighty Wabash signal skip?? ;D It was a great station to listen to.

LOL Its funny you mention the federal pen... Are you talking about our owner who was doing some hard time for...(Well I wont mention it here) but if you worked at ZZQ you know what I mean.. He lost his license for ZZQ as well as a few stations in Missouri I believe...

And to the other poster,, yes I knew Debbie Hunter,, Very Sweet girl about my age,,, we even kinda thought about dating and hung out a bit, but we were just more friends than anything.. I kinda wish I could contact here again,, but im sure she's probably moved out the area and married by now... Kyle West was the very young PD at the time,,, still in highschool and often doing homework in the studio.

Michael Rice?

He's been out of jail for 3 or 4 years on charges of child molestation. He's leasing WAPZ 1250 Wetumpka, Alabama (Montgomery). He'd proposed to buy it, but the transfer was dismissed.

I don't think I have her contact information anymore, but I know she lives, or lived until the Cumulus budget cuts a month ago, in Columbia, MO. I don't think she's married, but I can't be sure anymore. I only worked with her for a few months, when KBBM 100.1 brought her on-board for middays and I was on KPLA 101.5. However, after I got a full-time job out of radio and kept doing part-time, but at the competition, one of our program directors was good friends with her. Apparently, they went to college together. So, I'd still run into her from time-to-time.
