107.7 KOUL Corpus Christi upgrade

I think this Young Country 107-7 and 93-5 station might be ILLEGAL! KOUL 107-7 is rebroadcast on K228XM 93-5 in Corpus Christi for several years now and 93.5's owned by same people as 107-7 the primary station. maybe that's why they are going to move 107-7 closer to town so they can drop 93-5 when the move's completed and then it will be legal? but that doesnt change that it's illegal now, does it ? Someone tell me if I have this wrong but last time I was in area 107 did not make it into town very well
the following comes from part 74.1232.

(d) An authorization for an FM translator whose coverage contour extends beyond the protected contour of the commercial primary station will not be granted to the licensee or permittee of a commercial FM radio broadcast station. Similarly, such authorization will not be granted to any person or entity having any interest whatsoever, or any connection with a primary FM station.

this link will come useful for translator operators http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/part74rule.html

K228XM also operates with an actual kilowatt. Details aren't ownership's strong suit

Is that TPO or out the antenna? I've seen a few translators that have TPOs nearing 1kW, however the power out to the antenna was only 250 watts.

it has a 3 bay antenna, and a one kilowatt transmitter. In order to be legal it's got to have some Seriously leaky connectors. Ha Ha. On a good day you can get it in Refugio.

Plenty of stations have transmitters which are rated for higher output than the station is licensed to run. Today's transmitters can be adjusted to nearly any intermediate power in full compliance with the terms of the license. A 250 watt translator might, for example, need around 550 watts into the transmission line to get an ERP of 250 watts H & V.

Depending on the antenna manufacture and the interbay spacing, a 3 bay FM antenna with a long coax run may be very close to unity gain.

The license app, for k228XM which specifies .290 KW is a crock. With a 3bay they should be getting at least unity. Add this to the 1000 watt reading on their transmitter equals WAAAAAAAAAY over power. Corpus Christi is the home of overpowered LP stations. 97.9 and 100.3 run WAAAAAAY hot. (like 1/2 a KW or better.) 107.9 was 2.5 KW when it was on. Most of the whole town is dirty. No one does any harm out here two hours from civilization, so everyone just seems to get a pass.

2500 watts on an lp station that's unbelievable

and I liked 97-9's format.

103.3 is required to change because k236cm is a 250 mile move in for KSIX on 95.1. Since it duplicates 103.3's coverage, 1033 has to change. It'll be interesting if 103.3 merely changes locations. KSIX is pretty big on getting solid FM coverage city wide.

Yeah you're probably right. maybe 103-3 doesn't have to rebroadcast 104-9, if they can change plans and move it.

Yesterday while driving south, 93.5 stayed with me all the way to Riviera. Some 52 miles away.

I may just be a small town pizza lawyer, but it's all legal. Heh heh

The 97-9 KRKF stream went mono recently. I listen online sometimes and it used to be stereo but not anymore. Is the transmitter mono now?
