107.9 - Getting "Hot"?

Looks like they are relaunching as a Rhythmic CHR, just like Wired 965. I wonder which one will lean more heavily towards Pop. It's funny that Radio One realized that hip-hop is fading in popularity before Beasley did and made the right adjustment.

P.S. While nobody was watching, BEN-FM has morphed into a full-fledged Hot AC and Mix 106.1 has moved even closer to Adult CHR by adding/readding several Rhythmic titles.

Definitely a Rhythmic CHR. This is really an interesting and fun market. Lots to choose from. Hot really can succeed. Here's how:

Power 99 and Wired are both hurting in AQH, PPM... a different story.

Power: 3.8-4.1-3.3 (861,200)
Wired: 3.2-3.0-3.0 (1,092,700)

Hot has the potential to beat both in AQH and slowly raise their PPM. Whoever is programming the new Hot is smart. They're programming it with the rhythmic format in mind. They're going to be able to steal from Power by playing the new hip-hop first and playing the throwbacks that they do similar to Power. They also are making sure to play the big pop hits and even the pop recurrent/gold, similar to Wired. Now that gives Philly two rhythmic stations.

Wired is playing a few songs I see Hot avoiding such as Pumped Up Kicks, but Hot is already playing a lot of pop I didn't expect them to touch. Especially for a Radio One hip-hop station.

From what I've heard, I've heard more urban than rhythmic, but it looks like earlier today, it was majority rhythmic. Dayparting or bad programming? Also, looks like their powers are playing every 1 hr 15 mins or so. The imaging really is horrible. The voiceguy sounds like he recorded them through the phone, although the production is decent. Why didn't they just steal from ATL? There's only a few imagers running, and you'd think with as long as the stunt was and the preparation, they'd have a good package going. Not to mention, a few times where the imager is overlapping songs that have no intros. Overall, I think the station is programmed very well and will have to be more hip-hop focused to win. Power is big on the R&B and it leaves Philly without a good hip-hop station considering Wired puts their pop hits over their hip-hop ones. I hope you enjoyed the post. May the best hip-hop station win! So far, I'm having a lot of fun listening!

Ben isn't playing currents, and they are still playing the occasional 70's track. Not really Hot AC to me- just an updated version of what they were doing before. Mix is still recurrent-based. Maybe a little less so, but CC isn't going to let them get too close to Q. It's similar to the KTU/Z100 split in NYC. KTU stays recurrent and gold based while Z gets the currents.

Hot 107.9 sounds confused. They signed on rhythmic but today they've moved more urban. They can't figure out whether they want to take on Power or Wired and, with that signal, they're not prepared to take on either one.

Anyone remember when The Beat signed on in 2002 and was playing songs like Dirty Vegas "Days Go By" next to mostly urban tracks? That sounded like a mess and they went back to full-time urban after a week or two. That's probably what will happen with Hot.

Radio One does a terrible job programming rhythmic stations. Even though the hip-hop audience is small, Hot would be better off trying to superserve them rather than being a weird mish-mash of Wired and Power. Drop the R&B (except for the biggest hits) and drop the Pop.

I'm probaly gonna start a fire to this one, but since 107.9 is not a powerhouse signal, why not make it a dance station, or just simulcast Wired's HD2 channel. ;D

Simulcast a station run by a competitor? Seems a bit less likely than the Mets winning the World Series.
