107.9 Hammond La breaking the law

Right now in my house and car I am picking up a LPFM on 107.9 ID'ing itself as a Hammond station. Now according to the fcc this is a community radio station of 2 miles or less. So how am I picking this thing up day in and day out? Its clear elevator music. What gives? How are they doing this?

How far are you from Hammond? That station is up about 45 meters on the tower and coverage looks pretty darn good.alot of factors go into coverage on LPFM.some get out 3-5 miles, some 10-15,while being legal.co channel and 1st adjacent are among the factors.one in colorado is way high on a mountain and can be heard 40 miles away.Maybe tropo ducting is coming into play as well. Also implying they are breaking the law is uncalled for, unless you have proof.

OK I forgot the question mark at the end. as for how far away I am. I am 30 miles from downtown hammond. This happens all the time. I emailed the fcc once and they sent me a document about LPFM stations. The average is less than 2 miles according to them.

FCC is incorrect.i stand by my original post, lots of these stations have bonus coverage based on frequency and the conditions i mentioned above. The Hammond station chose height over power and got great fringe coverage. Now some LPFM;s with horrible frequencies do only cover a couple of miles. They have a good antenna (Shively) and solid state xmtr. They apparently had someone who did their homework well..

107.9 with a 100,000 watter right next door on the MS Coast, WTF?!

Thats kind of my point. With Lafayette and Biloxi on 107.9 how can this happen?

It will sometimes single out a signal and bring it in... That's why at times, I'll catch KRRV OVER local KLRZ at times for... but you are in no man's land for the 107.9 signal and should get a mix of the two like me, but no 40 watts and a antenna will get you far. They are legal, just band conditions allowing for it tonight...

but its every night.

This station should get blasted by Hot 1079 in Lafayette, especially west of Hammond. I remember being able to pick up KTDY & KXKC when passing through Hammond. (all 3 are on the same tower east of Lafayette, although Hot is at a slightly lower height).

Re: 107.9 Hammond La breaking the law?

antenna is 47.5 meters on a water tower owned by the city.it is a swr antenna. Now this antenna can be optimized (depending on placement)using that tower to become directional with a very nice lobe toward Baton Rouge, with little downward radiation.it would cover Hammond well but also put a great signal toward BR.

Study the predicted signals of Lafayette, Hammond and Gulfport 107.9 for yourself:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x312/PaulEBurt/WZEN/WZEN.jpg

Image shows highest predicted signal at any point (500 meter square block), down to 40 dbu. Yellow areas are where the difference between the overlapping signals are 3db or less. This assumes that all stations are operating at full power with an omnidirectional radiation pattern, and of course does not account for tropo or other atmospheric stuff, or your exact receive conditions.

WZKX is a pretty good hike from the greater McComb metro area. KRKA looks to be even more distant.

cool map Doc.... Wish I had the program ;)

But tropo is a normal happening in South Louisiana especially this time of year. You never said the quality of the signal and as someone said, even though the antenna is supposed to be omni directional, most antennas actually favor one direction over another depending upon how they are installed

Best to try during the day as for example, WMTI's signal is not supposed to even reach the bayou area as they are on a first order channel away from KBZE and KXOR... however there are many times I can catch WMTI on the bayou less than 10 miles from the KXOR tower. But during the day, the weather conditions that allow for the enhancement leave and I can't catch at all... Also why I catch most of the Lafayette stations many times on the Bayou. and Many mornings I can catch stations on the gulf coast, natchez, and cenla

But they do use 136 watts (as per FCC application) with feed loss (Most cable used commercially will loose some) and antenna loss (the antenna is a SWR FMEC-1 that is supposed to do a 4 DB drop at the antenna ), is supposed to knock it down to 36 watts ERP

The guy who runs 107.9 is VERY FCC complient. The people on this board "bitching" about 107.9 breaking the law don't have the first clue on what he is doing. Which is all and everything IN COMPLIENCE. You that complain are not worthy to even fix a cart machine. Or...for that matter, run one. sincerly, PIG VOMIT

I didn't take it as a complaint, more of a why is 107.9 coming in at a certain spot PigMan. Cart machines are still in use? wow, I thought the industry had moved forward, no wonder these kids today can't put down the IPOD.

Im sure if the FCC comes a-knocking, 107.9 will have all of their paperwork in order and neatly filed

Yes, pigvomit knows cart machines, and you sir, Mr. Ipod are no cart machine! Yeah, the guy who runs 107.9 is an eng by trade and keeps things pretty on the up and up. Real good guy, too. PIGVOMIT gives this post: 1 THUMB UP!
