107.9 Pirate in Gwinnett???

Traveling along Pleasant Hill Rd between Ronald Regan Pkwy and Club Dr I noticed HOT 107.9 fading away to some explicit Hip-Hop songs. Interesting the music completely took over HOT 107.9 at the red lights.

Thats probably skip coming in from another market. A local pirate would not hop on top of a local station. It would cause interference to their own signal as well as attract attention from the FCC. Pirates want a frequency of their own, free from interference, since they are usually low power.

There is WLNK 107.9 out of Charlotte (hot AC) and WDBN 107.9 out of Dublin (urban).

I used to get WQZY out of Dublin on 95.9 all the time.

WDBN is old school hip hop, I believe, and also has a very low signal. Explicit Hip Hop? Wonder if it wasn't a problem with Hot 107.9 itself.

No it wasn't an out of town station. It was explicit hardcore hip-hop bleeding over HOT 107.9.

You mentioned that it completely overtook when you stopped at a red light... any chance it was another driver with an FM transmitter for their ipod? I used to have one in my car, and if you were in the car next to me, you could hear it pretty clearly.

Thats probably what it is. These mobile transmitters use the (in)famous BH1417 chip made by Rohm. They have 14 frequencies presettable by dip switches. 107.9 is one of the frequencies available. These come under part15 of the FCC regs but the FCC should maybe take a second look since they can interfere with news and emergency info from legal broadcasters.

That's because 107.5's tower is right there at I-85 and Jimmy Carter.
