107.9 Sacramento

I've been out of the iHeart building for 25 months, and have zero inside intel. I'm asking this in all sincerity----why wouldn't they come back in with Country? Yeah, The Bull got bumped to a translator, but that was in a three-way country race. Now (or as soon as they can get on the air) it'd be just them and KNCI.

And classic country on 103.5 KNTY. Three way again( for full power FM stations).
Oh, yeah---I forgot. Still (and I could be way wrong), I think over time, there's more of a potential upside in Country than in just about anything else that iHeart isn't already doing or couldn't pivot an existing station toward.

93.7 HD-2 The Bull, 107.1 The Bull, Along with HD-2 the Wolf, HD-3 the Ranch, on KNCI-105.1 And 103.1 KKCY From Yuba City is clear in the Citrus Heights, Roseville, and Rocklin area's. Lots of country on the FM Dial. And 103.5 Kat country can be heard in the south area, along with 1420 KSTN AM.

And apart from KNCI, is anyone listening to those in the Sacramento PPM market?

Never mind 93.7 HD-2 and 107.1—if—IF—-IHeart were to revive The Bull on 106.9, at the very least the translator would go away.

It would be a 3 way battle over a 7 share. I’ve seen bigger country markets with less competition. Plus, I heard KNCI billing is only 4 to 5 million and country audience generally sticks to their favorite station.

And one other thing. IHeart didn’t take The Bull out behind the barn to shoot it because they were ready to give up on Country. They did it because The Breeze was blowing up in SF and doing it here was an easy way into AC. But they only had four signals on FM and the weakest at the time they made the decision was The Bull.

If they’d had five FMs, they might have made a different choice. Now they will.

Again, I have no inside knowledge. And I’m genuinely asking why they wouldn’t bring The Bull back onto a full-market signal. And the answers don’t involve their own translator, an FM in Yuba City or an AM in Stockton.

Michael,, All I was pointing out was the number of country music signals that are on the dial north to south besides KNCI, and any new country station I Heart may establish on 107.9. Please take the time to read the posts instead of just glancing at them.

Whatever the format is they must be pushing to get on the air soon. Spent $6M on a license last year that hasn’t generated a dime of revenue!

That cost is capitalized and is not an expense. And we are talking about a company that had $272 million in just the fourth quarter of 2021 revenue and an EBITDA of $99 million. We are talking about a company with a billion dollars in annual revenue.

They will spend far more than $6 million after launching the station and paying for the expected losses in at least the first year of operation. This is neither unusual nor excessive.

Changing the format of an existing station can also cost many millions.

You’re assuming I glanced. I read it—-twice—-before responding. And I found the need to clarify.

If iHeart considers putting The Bull back on a full-market signal, their considerations in terms of possible competition won’t include their own translator, an FM in Yuba City or an AM in Stockton. It may not even include The Wolf this time around, given that it’s largely classic country.

It’ll come down to whether there’s a billing upside in challenging KNCI again and how badly iHeart wants Bobby Bones on a meaningful signal in Sacramento. Michael Rivers Kramer makes a good point about how small the available share and revenue are. But find me a format in this market where that’s not the case.

For clarification and correction, the Bill is on a translator licensed to North Highlands and broadcasts from the KYRV tower on Quail Lane in Roseville.

KNTY is carrying WW1, Real Country which is good based format with some current music. It must be an interesting sell with 3 stations targeting the Latino demographic.

I thought I heard some testing the other weekend - maybe two weekends ago now on Saturday. Didn't listen long enough to get any IDs/slogans but I usually don't hear CHR/modern music on 107.9 down here.

That Entravision move didn’t make sense to me either. The put classic country on a signal from midtown and El Fuego on the tower in the foothills.

I do think country makes sense for 107.9. You get the currents, Bobby Bones show, and a piece of the KNCI pie. Yes only a 7 share pie but a younger demo than classic hits. It also frees up the translator for something else.

This is not Nashville. Sure it’s not San Francisco, but the Country share is not that high in Sac.

No telling what goes on at Entravision. I’ve been puzzled by their moves in the past. They probably thought they could recoup some of what they had before. Truthfully, I think Country would be the last format anyone would sell in combo with a Latin Urban, and their full Spanish language stations.
Perhaps. But know that 7 share is already split over two stations and as I pointed out previously, there are markets with a 12-13 country share that don’t have three stations in the format. I was flabbergasted when iHeart launched the Bull on 92.5 and looking at the ratings, they failed to knock the Wolf out of the format and instead, battles with them to be a weak second to KNCI.

Then you look at KSEG, which I believe is serving as a de facto classic hits station. The station is really soft for a Classic Rock and with KCCL having a weak signal, I believe there’s opportunity there.

This reminds me of then Modern AC KZZO being knocked off their perch by the launch a mainstream CHR, KDND.

Yeah, but you can carve into KSEG by tweaking KYRV, which originally was designed to cannibalize KSEG and KRXQ.

Will Classic Hits work?

There's KCCL K-Hits

Will iHeart try it?
I could likely see a similar format to KOSF in the Bay. I guess technically it’s “classic hits”. Definitely doesn’t sound much like K-Hits which has a pretty small standard classic hits library.

I do believe 80’s hits have been tried before out here, with mixed results on a rimshot signal. But I wonder if it’d be better to wedge themselves between KSEG, sister KYRV, and KCCL or wedge themselves between KNCI and KNTY.
