All true, but back to your original post---if Bill Drake were alive, giving him 107.9 in 2022 wouldn't guarantee anything.

We go through this every few years on the San Francisco board:

"Bring back KFRC!"

As what?

"What it was! Top 40!"

Okay, but that means they'll be playing the same music Wild 94.9 plays.

"No, not that crap! The Top 40 they used to play."

You mean what would now be oldies, or at best Classic Hits?

"Yeah!"

That's been done twice before. Both times they had to change. Why would it work this time?

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest “Sunday I’m In Love” by the Cure for tomorrow, but it could be something Mother’s Day-related instead.


I don’t think anyone in a decision-making position at iHeart has the sense of humor to do it, but if I were stunting and wanted to launch The Bull on Monday, I’d absolutely do that.
 
If 107.9 flips to The Bull it would be nice to have something completely different on 93.7 HD-2 and put kste on 107.1 Why they need to is a great question.

Actually if I had my way it would be Classic Gold Rock and Roll KXOA Sacramento!!! Like it was in 1972, 73, 74 when it was owned by Bill Drake. If I had my way. Never going to happen its not commercially viable these days. But it sounded great back then. The music that was played in the format then.

Those days are gone, nobody knows how to put three notes together anymore with some great hooks added for good measure. Music has changed way too much and in my humble opinion not for the better. But then thats just my view and everyone else has their view no matter their age.

True I remember there was similar statements on the Los Angeles and New York boards saying bring KHJ back or WABC as a top 40 station. Every time we talk about oldies in the past few years we end up running into an issue over what playlists an oldies station would play today. Most likely we ended up with KRTH today from 1980-2005 at most and based on what KIIS Los Angeles played between the 1980's-2005. But the OP wanted 1950's-1975 in the playlist when that may not be viable on OTA radio today.
 
Its crazy, all the stations available to listen to in this the Sacramento market, AM, FM, HD-2 Subchannels, and all the strong rimshot stations and nobody can give us a decent classic hits station worth listening too. KCCL 101.5 Just doesn't make the grade. Yet Fresno has KYNO 940, Modesto has 920 KVIN The Vine, and their FM translator at 92.3 and near Manteca the Vines translator on 107.1, along with Classic Hits105.5 The River from Copperopolis. These stations are all locally owned and operated. This market hasn't had a decent classic hits station since KHYL became V-101. Its way overdue to return here. This would be Bill Drakes easy task because he knew how program a station that was worth listening too. Ah the good ole days.

To the best of my knowledge, Bill Drake never owned the stations he programmed. At RKO, he delivered the audience he was told to deliver from the company ownership. That's what programmers do. They don't program the music they personally like, or the music they personally know. They program what they're told, or they get replaced.

Right now the big issue in the classic hits format is dealing with an increasingly aging audience that the advertisers don't want. This is part of the rebranding of WOGL in Philadelphia, a station that's watched its audience get older and older. So if a classic hits station were to come to Sacramento, it's pretty likely that a lot of its music would be 90s and early 2000s, and would also incorporate a lot of rock, because classic rock attracts younger audiences.
 
And there is only one decent LPFM And thats KZHP 93.3 with an honorable mention to KDEE 97.5 The Foundation Station. 92.9, 98.9, and 103.1 are all below the line. 96.5 The Voice is not bad at all most of the time.
 
Bill Drake owned KXOA107.9 Along with Gene Chenult. Its in the history books. Ask the Eagles, Tom Nokishima he worked for Bill Drake when he owned it. Tom was a young man just starting out in radio 72, 73. I got to meet him once while he was changing reels one day when I was picking up an album I won from KXOA. Very nice gentleman. Tom Buck worked for Bill also along with Kent Randles a very good broadcast engineer.

Drake-Chenault did own KXOA for a time. Backstory here:


And in the case of RKO, Drake was sold to a board that wanted MOR stations. On the RKO board at the time was one guy, Willett Brown, who owned KGB, which Drake was consulting and which was winning with Top 40.

Brown persuaded the board to let Drake do KHJ. And Drake asked for some very unusual concessions: He would not be the day-to-day PD, but he would have full creative control. The GM would focus on sales, period. But Drake would set the commercial limit and certain sales norms like sales remotes would not be allowed.

The GM would be informed about jock hires/fires, etc. , but only to the extent of being able to competently sell and promote the station and its talent.

Nobody else ever had a deal like that. And after eight years, a new President of RKO decided Drake shouldn’t either. That was the end of that.
