107.9 technical question

A few weeks ago I had started listening to The Track more often for the reason I now listen to WKLU, a wider variety of songs aimed at the second half of the baby boom generation.

However, the main reason I now listen to WKLU instead of The Track is because 101.9's signal is strong & crisp.

I find that the signal at 107.9 is weak, has to be turned up to match the volume of the station I was just listening to no matter which station it was, and is very thin. Under previous ownership when the station had Night Breeze, the jazz programming in the evening, and personalities like Jerry Curtis in the midday, I don't remember 107.9 having a signal this poor.

I know nothing about technical stuff in radio. What's the case here?

The only way this should be possible is if the Track is having major technical problems, or there is something strange with your individual tuner (highly unlikely: interference from the Shine 99 translator in Brownsburg)

I'm not really in a position to check the signal strength from either station.

WNTR should have roughly twice the coverage of WKLU.

If it's the loudness of the signal verses strength of the carrier, it could be they have a new processor and don't know how to operate it. And/or are not modulating the signal to 100%.

Ah, yeah, I guess he said it was too quiet, not that it was static. My mistake.

No prob. These processors now have so many handles on them that it's almost intimidating for someone that does not have a technical background. Most operaters take it out of the box and put it online expecting it to work and not knowing what to do when it does not. On the other hand, you have people that think they know it all and monkey with them until they get it where the modulation monitor meters do not move off off 100%!

Seems like about the time the station switched from WTPI to the Track, the audio went all to hell, and hasn't improved since. I am sure they have decent equipment and great engineering, so I really don't understand what the problem is. I was listening to Willy the other day, and there were times the music was really drowning him out when he had the mike open....not sure if it's how he runs the board, but whatever it is ain't good!

If they changed the format, they need to look at the processing. I'm in Louisville so I can't hear it, however for example you would process CHR differently than Country differently than Alternative.

Sometimes you'll hear an automated break drowned out by the music/music bed on WASK-FM. Is that maybe what you were talking about with Willy?

More like the "potting up and down" levels on the software aren't right when it's automated?

??

Ive noticed down here in Martinsville that 107.9 has a quiter, less modulated signal, and I notice more static because of it. However, I think the Music, although quiter on 107.9 seems to have more dynamic range, and the peaks dont seem to be chopped off like on most stations. I think it is probably still processed for the soft rock and jazz that WTPI played, ive always noticed the signal to have more noticable static, but more crisp and natural sounding processing. If I had to guess, I would say they havent changed the processing over from WTPIs old set up. In my area WKLU sounds louder, but more muddy, this is probably because I am not in a city grade signal spot for WKLU.
