whats the deal?

hot AND fresh 107?

is this a move to be more like webz the beat?
 
Or just spicing up the station and blowing the yearly budget for the Spring Break crowd?

Just one problem. Old dudes like me aren't cruising the strip with Panama City's only known radio station, the Great 108, blasting anymore (and I wasn't an "old dude" when 108 was Great).

As first tipped earlier, DOUBLE O RADIO Top 40 WPFM/PANAMA CITY makes a shift in direction at 5p (CT) with a move to Top 40/Rhythmic and the new moniker, HOT 107-9.

On paper, this looks like a good move. Of course I'm only seeing the 12+ numbers but the #1 station in the market is urban (The Beat) and #3 is Island which has a history of being a mainstream CHR with a slight rhythmic lean. So PFM, sitting way down in 10th place, had a choice, either totally change formats or shift the current CHR format somewhat & go after #1 & #3. There is certainly room for HOT to wedge themselves between THE BEAT and ISLAND musically, IF and ONLY IF, they can do it right. (The best successful example I can point to
is FLY 92-1 right next door in Ft Walton/Destin)

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE they're making sets the new HOT up to lose before it even starts!
They are HANGING onto KIDD KRADDICK in the Morning lol. A rhythmic CHR w/KIDD lol...
Very poor decision. They'd be FAR better off just rolling music in the morning.

The new imaging is just ok. Female isn't bad, guy sounds like he's trying too hard/forced.
They're using a jingle package but I apologize, I don't know who's it is.
The jingle package itself sounds good, personally I don't like the way I've heard
them sound next to the music. Also just a personal preference but they should have dropped
the "point" from the frequency and just been "HOT 107 Nine"

Listened online for a about an hour overnight (2a-3a), it's a pop leaning rhythmic really. They're definitely not as urban as THE BEAT which is right where they should be.
(And holy crap, I caught FOUR stop sets in one hour??? Overnight??? Bad!)

Hasn't WPFM been "HOT" before... like 10 years ago after they flipped from the short lived Alternative format?
 
Yawn. When listening to 107.9 a couple weeks ago my impression was that they were already slightly more rhythmic than Island, and as mentioned elsewhere, that they didn't sound bad, at all. But in a town of 40,000 and a market of 160,000, they're the third player in a market with room for two.

Can a challenger knock off two established players and emerge the winner?

Sure, but first the challenger has to be obviously different-and/or better, requiring that the others have obvious flaws and/or weaknesses. And then they need to invest tons-o-marketing money, effort and creativity to exploit their superiority. I just don't see it happening.

FWIW, mid-March is too late to make any hay with Spring Break. The ad bucks are already spent. And the kids are useless. They stay a week and then fly back to East Lansing.

Winning in Panama City is all about them year-rounders. See PAP & Sunny for details...
 
I like it when 107.9 used to play alot of dance music and remixes before they flip it to Hot 107.9 a few years ago Then the flip it to 1079 PFM. Speaking of Club La Vela I know Island 106 and 107.9 takes turns whoever get most of the money to play live @ Club La Vela every night or on the weekends.
 
Panama City and Panama City Beach will be a good spot for dance and techno music like South Florida does. Like Party 93.1 from South Florida and here in the North Florida and Northwest Florida for 107.9
 
Tough situation, actually. So damn many FM sticks for so few human beings. Gotta program something on the SOB, and--again--they really sound pretty good.

The real task is figuring out how to cut through the glut of stations, especially the glut in their chosen format, to be seriously competitive.

It's really nothing a million-dollar-a-year marketing budget couldn't help solve...

I know. I was kinda thinking along the lines that it should have flipped to Country a long time ago, maybe as far back as the Rock 103.5 days. I don't know how many owners 107.9 has had over the years. I don't know if it would have been practical for any of the past owners of 107.9. I was just adding the comment that it's strange that no one has tried to save this former great station by throwing up Country.
WPFM has fallen so far from it's hay-days in the 1980's that it's hard to imagine any music format that would bring it back to the top. Maybe Rap?
 
I think it's a tough call considering you have CC ruling the market. Honestly, it seems like Spring Break has evolved to the demo that this weeks version of Hot 107.9 has become, but that's not a valid format for about 300 other days. The only reason that I think PFM is still messing with this format is because it bills enough from two world famous clubs (albeit at a very reduced rate I am sure...) and the follow the leader clubs latch on as well, making it a mindless exercise in mediocrity and imagination of what format could make better use of their time and efforts. Having had the pleasure of spending one night near the market (and gin free, CCENG) before heading to N0LA, the markets actually got a bunch of follow the leader formats. It's become the theory of why try to be #1, let's just keep the other guy from being that good by copying him and sharing the love. IMdisH(clueless)0 - WPFM must do two things:

1.) Fix the signal by moving their tower about 12 miles S and max. the signal along the beach.

2.) Going lighter, classic and funky --- wedge in between 98.5's gold AC and Beach and bring back "the" great years. Lets face it, thats where the $$$ demo is. Ride it out.

Any form of country, rock or CHR/Urban is just over-overkilled.
 
if HOT didnt work the first time around what makes them think it will again? DUD! I've also noticed Arrow plays less classic rock and sounds more like the old Pirate 94.5. Crap

Party 93.1 in Miami flipped formats in December 2010. They are now "Easy 93.1, playing South Florida's Soft and easy favorites."
 
..and the uncanny thing is, everyone is coming here for spring break!! so much for their new flip.
