What exactly is this station and what are they doing in Charlotte? They SUCK! Im sorry! Comments?

And what, exactly, DO they suck? They're not exactly at the bottom of the ratings heap. They're doing exactly what most of us say a good radio station should do...be LIVE and LOCAL (with the exception of John Tesh). That's more than I can say for most of the other "cookie-cutter" FM's in Charlotte.

They serve an audience that just happens NOT to include you...and to that audience they don't suck anything. Those folks listen and buy the products advertised on the station, otherwise they would not exist.

Amen Brother Smith!
Just becuse it doesn't fit into the ideal mold for alex4490 doesn't mean they "suck".
I am more than confident that we could look at stations you enjoy and pick them
apart ad infinitum (that's a latin word meaning a long friggin time).
I might commend you on such an eloquent and well thought out post though....
nah.

I give them credit for doing good PERSONALITY radio. It's not easy and it's not cheap.

As for live and local....Since mornings and afternoons are beamed to other stations they only have a few places in the hour for real local content. That's still better than most.

I'd feel better if their ratings were better 12+. I don't get to see the other demos.

They are aimed at woman! I know lots of folks who listen. My wife listens to nothing else! What other option does she have as a 40 year old woman in Charlotte? Nothing! She can only listen to Kiss for a short time. Once a rap song comes on...scan it is. The Beat and 97.9? Too much rap for her. 92.7, 100.9 and 101.9? Ummm, what are these songs? WLYT and K104.7? Only when she is in a mellow mood. She hates country as do a lot of northern transplants here. 99.7 and 95.7..guy demo all the way. Mix 106? Nope, that is for her mom. What's left? The answer is 107.9, their talk and hot ac music.

The Link or "Clink" had their peak a number of years ago when Matt & Ramona and Bob & Sheri were both really dominant (M&R still are) and they had had a good mix of music in the middays before going to talk with Pam Stone. I swear they had one book where they were like a 5 12+, right before Stone came in (2002, 2003??).

That will never happen again.

If they would have sticked with the bookends instead of going for all talk, they'd have bigger numbers today. But it's probably easier to sell talk and money talks. A real Hot AC would be nice to have again in this market, but we do have the Jones Satellite station on 97.3.

I agree 100% with you!!!

Is 97.3 really a charlotte local station? Their frequency is very weak on the east side of charlotte. Now that 107.9 is most talk, charlotte needs another Hot AC. I really don't think 107.9 will ever do fulltime HotAC format again. Could 104.7 be slowing switchig to that format?

97.3 is not a Charlotte station, it is a Wilkesboro station.

104.7 will not switch to HOT AC. Why? Because Hot AC takes away from CHR. Since 104.7 and 95.1 are in the same building, I don't think we'll see a switch.

I keep wondering why Lite 102.9 hasn't done it. Or why they still have that name.

If 107.9 is talk, they have the name that makes them a "full powered talk station". That will be fine if they go talk.

I see 104.7 a smooth jazz station! Maybe...in the future

Way off on that prediction! I swear you guys say things like this to bait me and here I am taking the bait. K is doing just fine, we run sold out most of the time. Give the A/C audience to CC/Lite? I don't think so! That just doesn't make sense to me. I would love to see a Smooth Jazz format in Charlotte but it's a format that doesn't get traction or numbers most places.

My prediction is that The Link will revert to a music format (probably Hot A/C) when/if the station is sold. The new owner will have paid a ton of money for the station and will have a high debt to service so they will look at cutting the budget.

107.9 The Link / 1110 WBT For Sale?

Speaking of 107.9 The Link reverting to a music format when/if the station is sold. A fly on the wall over at One Julian Price Place told me that they are pretty nervous right now about Lincoln selling the stations. At least, those without contracts are nervous. The fly told me that the name Clear Channel is being passed around pretty heavily.

I know Clear Channel would probably love to get a hold of 1110 WBT & 107.9 The Link, but I don't know how they would do that without spinning off some of their current Charlotte stations. If they did spin off some stations, I could see them selling to someone they wouldn't have to compete with. Someone like a religious broadcaster. Say, for example they sold 96.9 to the Billy Graham outfit. Would they move the country format to 107.9? 107.9 Kat Country?

I still don't think Clear Channel is going to buy the stations. I see a group like Entercom picking up them up.

Any thoughts?

Better yet, think what would happen if LFM donated WBT and/or the Link to Billy Graham and just took a tax write-off. Come to think of it, Blue Ridge Broadcasting is assembling a staff to do a Christian CHR format somewhere...maybe they have a finger in the "Charlotte Pie" somewhere.

Time will tell....

We can speculate on this one forever and not come close to what will actually happen....Here's one, see if it makes sense to you....

WBT to Clear Channel....Clear Channel seems to like the big 50KW stations. They own a lot of them!

WLNK to Radio One....They only have 2 stations in Charlotte and could easily add another FM. Then I could see them doing Urban A/C on 107.9 and maybe make another try at Smooth Jazz on 92.7. They have stations running Smooth Jazz in their other markets.

WBTV to CBS....? Maybe? Am I dreaming here? In the past CBS has worked hard to hang on to WBTV as an affiliate. Maybe they'd like to own it, even if they had to shed one of their FM's to do it.

In any case it will be a sad day when/if it happens, I really don't want to think about it. When the transfer to Lincoln took place there was a persistant rumor they would hold the broadcast properties for a year before selling them. Something else to address is who will buy Lincoln Financial Sports the valuable TV Sports Production unit.....Raycom maybe? Perhaps Raycom would be in the running to buy WBTV as well.

I can't believe smooth jazz wouldn't work in a place like Charlotte.

If it was done well I think it could work. it would take a big promotional effort and a budget for a long running station contest. I'm thinking of something low key like the "Take your Radio to Work" money give away that 102.9 did years ago. It was very effective, people LOVED the station.

The problem with Smooth Jazz might be that the audience for that music often skews older than owners would like.

My choices (If I had anything to do with it)

Capitol Broadcasting sells WMYT, and purchases WBTV. Wouldn't mind CBS buying it either. Though, I really think it's going to wind up with Raycom.

WLNK and WBT to Curtis Media.

I'd rather have my stations ran out of Raleigh than in San Antonio.
