1070/Greenville

So is this station officially dead now? So sad to see a 50kw signal like that off the air. Have they officially signed off/gone dark? Are they even licensed anymore?

If I remember correctly towards the end they weren't even broadcasting at full power and the equipment was in poor condition.

According to the FCC database, on 9/12/2008 WCSZ filed another "Notification of Suspension of Operations / Request for Silent STA", stating the same reason as the previous STA: "TO CONSERVE ASSETS WHILE PURSUING FUNDING, THE LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS AUTHORITY TO REMAIN SILENT FOR 180 DAYS". Someone must have future plans for this station instead of just letting it die.

It is certainly sad to see this once great station off the air. As a lifelong resident of the Greenville area, I remember it in its heydays. At one time it was SC's only 50kw station. I don't remember exactly when, but sometime in the late 60's or early 70's the station's original building burned to the ground. It was replaced by the mobile home that still houses it to this day.

Could we see a good 50,000 watt am back in Greenville? Looks like we might! Hell, Anderson has more locally-geared AM`s with local programming than Greenville! Someone needs to fire up 1070 AM to serve the area with local news, weather, sports, music, etc.....

And I suppose you have a few million in your back pocket to burn?

I don't see AM being successful in the Greenville area anymore, with the exception of WORD on 950/1330, and now that they are on 106.3, how long will those AM's survive? Is it any wonder Clear Channel leases out 660 and 1440 rather than struggle for profitability.

1070 is a "white elephant". I am sure the equipment needs upgrading, and the power bill alone on a 50kw station would be enough to scare most folks away. It is my understanding that there are some major detuning issues to the directional array due to some large metal power poles that were put up near the station a few years back.

If I was a rich fellow with money to throw away, I might just take it on as a hobby. Otherwise, I don't see the station being profitable for anyone wanting to make money with it. In the words of Ross Perot, your money would be going away with a "giant sucking sound" indeed!

I hear that they are working out the techinal problems and 1070 will be back VERY soon!

Bill the engineer has fixed the problems, but NO, the deal fell through for someone running it. Bill had it running classic country for awhile, and they just applied for a STA to remain silent.

Does anyone know if they were even OPERATING at 50kW in recent years? Seems like even with the technical problems the signal would be better than it was, if they were.

Speaking of dead or dying AMs...what about WTBI-AM? It amazes me they continue to operate it with the upgraded FM signal. There is really no need for it at all anymore. Seems to me that 10,000 watt signal would cost quite a bit of $$$ to run. It is in a horrible location.

Yes, Bill finally got the MW-50 up to 50KW when it was playing oldies. It took a LOT of work..... a LOT of work....

Any update on 1070? The FCC database still lists the last STA that was posted earlier.

But apparently it was accepted for filing, but never granted according to the FCC database? It would have to have been granted or it seems the license would have been revoked. I'm confused. Wonder what that old mobile home looks like inside...surprised it's still standing. When the economy was better they should have tried to LMA it or something. It is actually probably one of the best AMs the market has - they aren't daytime only (660) and if operating properly it should get Greenville and Spartanburg. Most AMs, such as 950, 1330, 1260, 1440, etc. can't get both due to the spread-out nature of the area (unlike Cola., Chas who have 5kw AMs that get everything just fine).
