1070--Is Anyone Minding the Store??

Hi...
I frequently listen to 1070 the Fan late at night. I often notice that local commercials and network commercials often play at the same time, right on top of one another, and that local commercials play for an additional minute or two, right on top of the ESPN program. This sometimes happens during daytime as well.

It's mildly irritating to the listener, but if I were a local advertiser, I'd be really PO'd.

Can't that be fixed by flipping a switch or setting a parameter in a program?

Just makes me think 1070 is a throwaway, 'cept for those action-packed, listener-magnet WNBA broadcasts. ;D

Yes, It's sad... I've noticed the same thing with one of the stations in Fort Wayne after hours. The operations manager or P.D. or G.M. should check on their station (IE: LISTEN).

Tell you what. Send them a note, email and see if they respond.

well i guess the lights are on but no1 is home....

ive heard that on a few stations down where im at "after hours" ether locals and network mixes or things off cue ect ect
mabe it would actually pay to have someone there at NIGHT!

Yes, it's sad that it has become a "throwaway" station. I expect more from Emmis, especially in their hometown.

The "local" aspects of the station are awful. It's like listening to a small market station.

Kravitz and Eddie are un-listenable. The only thing I can listen to is Mike and Mike - but having to endure tall those "No Experience Necessary" promos makes me cringe.

And this is the same company that pioneered the Sports Radio format with WFAN New York.

Yeah...let me see if I can find the right person and I will report back!

This overlap phenomenon is not limited to after-dark hours.

This is frequently happening during the day M-F with shows like "Mike & Mike," "The Herd" and "Tirico & Van Pelt."

One missed spot that an advertiser doesn't pay for costs the station more than hiring a part-timer for the whole day.

Not if you have plenty of room for make goods.

I did write an e-mail a LONG time ago about this very subject. The GM did respond - his name escapes me. He blamed the network and said I should see this problem disapear very soon. That was back in March....................

I did receive a prompt and cordial response from the PD stating that he hoped they had "moved past that unpleasantess" and claiming that they "have solved the problems from the most part."

At this point I'd have to say XL-950 has about the best overall sound to it when it comes to the three sports stations. Patrick gets me over there, not bad for a station clinging to life in ratings, but they keep plugging away and keep locals on the board all day.

Not fixed as of 8:30 Wednesday morning...

Now, I'm not a "radio industry professional," but if I had a problem with my operation such that the messages of paying advertisers couldn't get out clearly, I'd kinda be all over it until it was solved. If it was a software problem, I'd be all over the vendor until it got fixed.

Judging from the responses and stories here, stations seem not to view this as a major issue. Am I misreading?

I don't know what automation 1070 is using, but with most automation, there is a way to only return to the network once the programmed stopset is finished. Sure, that means falling into the middle of Mike & Mike, but that probably sounds better than having Auto Owners Insurance's jingle playing at the same time as the Mel Kiper Jr. song.

Isn't it funny?

WIBC was the CASH COW and for years sales complaints realted to Carmel night coverage have been voiced over and over. Yet the CASH has remained.

In a period of 30 days the cash moved from WIBC to WIBC 2 (FM). Now it's an automated unattended station similar to a Crawfordsville AM. Sounds like WCVL when Key started ESPN there. dead air, overlap audio, breaks within the program while the program is running, missed breaks, etc.

Isn't there a better use for this? Country? WIRE did well for awhile. Are advertisers sold on FM so much they won't place money there now? Or is this the real reason for the switch to FM? Did the 22 year old media buyers at the whor, er, ad ajencies create the move? More to this than you know.

I really like Jeff and he IS a stand up guy. I hate that this move, though a business induced or required move, destroyed any Am audience in Indy.

If Jeff sells the station to PBS or donates it to a non -profit group can he buy another FM? HMMMM?

Obviously WIBC AM and many talkers still hanging onto AM proved that advertisers will buy AM if there are RATINGS!

No listeners - no buys. Simple mathematics.

Is 1070 now a throwaway - pretty much. Why not just simulcast WIBC-FM for a better reach?

I never understood just why they didn't do an AM-FM simulcast with WIBC. In other markets when they have moved a news-talker over to an FM frequency I have seen them do a simulcast. It would have made a great deal of sense to do that with WIBC. It's a real shame to see it become nothing more than a throwaway that no one's paying any attention to.

The throwaway part seems to be correct, that or just inept programming management; however, the original point of the split was stated to be an effort to maintain the "integrity" of the news/talk and sports programming respectively. With too many sporting events interrupting the regular news/talk shows, I'd bet both listeners and clients were complaining. They would go for weeks without hearing some of their weekend "specialty" shows during football and basketball season, so the split seemed to make sense from that aspect. In reality, it appears that 93.1 is the focus of their efforts, and apparently the thought is that 1070 is a plug-and-play deal. Turn on the feed from the satellite, and walk away. So far, it only sounds like they've got that "walk away" part down pat, obviously no one on the Circle is listening to the 1070. I have been at stations that use Audio Vault before (as the Emmis properties do), it is not that hard to set up for satellite programming - if you have someone with any clue doing the programming...and there lies the key to most of the problems Emmis has in Indy.

Can't speak for the programming people where Audio Vault is concerned, but Dave Hood is the AV Guru there & he is a whiz at making it do what it should. From that, I can draw one conclusion...no one has told him about this. And from that, I draw one further conclusion...no one is minding the store...or even listening to the store. No wonder my Emmis stock is worth less than $2 a share...grumble.
