1070 the Fan - Indianapolis or Toronto??

Lately I have been getting a station coming in fairly strong on 1070 that only IDs as '1070 the Fan' Today they were talking a lot about Toronto sports. The only 1070 the Fan I can find online is WFNI/Indianapolis. Did Toronto get a new station? I can tell that the guys on the talk program are Canadian with their accents (Pronouncing about like 'abewt', etc. which is usually the giveaway that it's from Canada) Previous to this, I would get a moderate CHOK/Sarnia on 1070. I find it hard to believe that WFNI would come in this strong in Vermilion, OH. Radio-locator doesn't list CHOK/Sarnia and they don't show anything in Toronto on 1070.

With CHUM on 1050 with 50,000 watts, no Toronto on 1070.

I thought maybe CHOK flipped formats to sports but their website still shows they are country along with CHOK FM 103.9...unless CHOK does some kind of sports talk show around 6pm and isn't playing country music all the time.

I'm going to guess that CHOK may have flipped. It would seem to make sense if they have. Far southwest Ontario is pretty well covered by the Detroit sports talkers. But off the top of my head, I think its safe to say there's a void for Canadian sports talk in that area.

www.chok.com still mentions 1070 on the site for country music along w/ 103.9 FM. Googling did not help.

Is it possible that maybe this was some ESPN (or whatever national radio network) commentary on the sports scene in T.O.? The ESPN radio guys can be long winded....

I've traveled Canada quite a bit during the last 20-25 years....including 3-4 business trips each year during most of that time. My observation is that a number Canadian music stations on the AM band (usually either country or oldies) have play-by-play sports and/or a sports talk block of programming in the evening. In the case of the latter, it's usually originated in Toronto and is focused on the local sports scene there.

So it may be that CHOK didn't flip, but just runs a block of nighttime sports programming. Also, it's not unusual for Canadian sports talkers to pick up some programs from U.S. sports networks. Particularly ESPN and particularly at night.

I don't think this was CHOK. While it's true that CHOK 1070 simulcasts on 103.9 FM, that's not a separate station. It's a "nested FM relay," the Canadian version of an AM-on-FM translator, and like an AM-on-FM translator in the US, they can't originate separate programming on 103.9. Also very much like an AM-on-FM translator in the US, most of CHOK's branding is now "103.9," so even if they were doing sports at night for some reason, it would still be branded as "103.9 the Fan," not "1070 the Fan," which was almost certainly Indianapolis even if the programming sounded Canadian.

WFNI uses the slogan 1070 The Fan many times an hour. Next time you hear it, listen to the stream at http://www.1070thefan.com/ and confirm that it's the same programming.
