1070 WFNI

Some things I noticed:
1) Something is weird with the top-hour tone. First, I don't think it really belongs on a sports-talker. Second, it doesn't sync up with the ESPN feed (I know that Sportscenter starts exactly at the top of the hour, and the tone is coming before the ID). I wonder if they're injecting it somehow after the IBOC delay.

2) I'm pretty sure the VO guy is Micheal Grady, scoreboard host on Indiana Sports Talk. His producer is doing something wrong, because he sounds far better doing the scoreboard updates.

3) Way too many plugs for WIBC. "We can't compete with Jake & Terry on FM 93 IBC"

4) WIBC needs some constant branding -- Which of these is it?
FM 93 IBC
93 IBC
FM 93 WIBC
[I could probably toss in some other variations)

5) Kravitz and Eddie don't seem to have any material. The show I listened to talked about how few sponsorships there were on the station, and that Angela Buchman should be hired by the Pacers to do weather updates during timeouts. I'm sure it was better the week that Kelvin Sampson got fired, but the mark of a good talker is having material when there really isn't a lot going on.

6) The automation must rejoin ESPN Radio on time when the break is over. I've heard them go back anywhere from 30 seconds early to 5 seconds early ("on ESPN Radio and ESPNradio.com"). They didn't have this kind of problem when News/Talk was running on that frequency.

I'd be surprised if Indianapolis is a profit bright spot when Emmis reports 1Q earnings in a couple of months...I know RadioNOW was pulling a higher spot load and probably at a higher rate than WFNI is generating.

And to top it all off last week on the biggest high school basketball night of the year (last Friday Sectional Semifinals) Indiana SportsTalk was nowhere to be found in Central Indiana because we had to endure the call in show about the Pacers losing again.

The true tell sign of White and Kravitz will be if the Colts begin stinking up the place; then we'll see what they can really do if anything...even during the whole Kelvin Sampson it was really blah.

To say the least 1070 WFNI has been a huge disappoinment.

Is there really talk they are looking to bring on the Cardinals or White Sox play-by-play for baseball season?

Considering they are the company who put together the original FAN in NYC, it is a big disappointment. Very unpolished with a medium market sound.

I had posted on this a while back, also noting that local ads often kept running on top of ESPN programs, often for up to 10 minutes, so it seemed.

Up to this point, the only difference between ESPN on 1070 and the old ESPN on 950 is 45,000 (50K-5K) watts daytime and 9883 watts (10K-117) at night. Yeah, I can hear 1070 at night...both the commercials and the programs at the same time...

Since the local shows are the only thing that really set them apart from the same sports babble you can find elsewhere, why not do more local content? Stupid question. It's money.

I enjoy Mike & Mike and Doug Gottleib. I don't enjoy Kravitz and Eddie. I still am loyal to Rake and Woch on XL 950.

Is there a PD for WFNI? Or is Jon Quick the official PD?

I have now heard three voices imaging the station all in the same day(and I'm not counting the ESPN voice). Some consistency please. You're one of three sports stations in this market, you would think you would want to make sure people know and identify what station you are.

Jim Cutler, the main imaging voice of ESPN Radio is for hire, and I think Emmis could easily afford to add him ... if they could sell more than 5 minutes of spots per hour on 1070.

I Thought Michael Grady was the man running the show at WFNI. maybe hes the assistant PD under quick or Kent Sterling

You know I find it funny that Kevin Lee was let go by Emmis prior to the switch of 1070 over to the Fan yet. other than Pacers/colts Programming. Kevin Lee is still gets some major airtime on the Fan

I'm not impressed with this operation at all. The Kravitz/White pairing has not been very good, and even their imaging, sports updates, etc. have sounded amatuerish.
Having worked in a number of markets similar to Indy, and in some larger ones, this product as it is currently presented isn't even as good as the other two stations it
competes with. Other than the signal strength, FNI's local programming isn't any better than 950's. I also felt that Emmis's presentation of the Colts games was not as
good as previous seasons when the game were flagshipped on Q95.

I agree. What a shame. It's as if they really don't care.
