1079TheFan.com Registered... For Pittsburgh?

Buzz on the Phoenix board about the registration of this domain, which may indicate a sports station could displace the country station there... Then again, CBS also owns a 107.9 and a "Fan" in this market... Could a frequency flip be possible?

While anything is possible, I don't see that making sense unless maybe there was a 3-way flip of the CBS stations, with Y108's country format going to 100.7 and the return of a true CHR B94.

Star did just hire a young female personality for nights....
http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/108502/elista-joins-wbzz-as-amd-nights
Looks like her background is entirely in CHR...

But doing stuff like this hurts ratings for a while as people can't find the new stations, and I think they'd be reluctant to mess with the Fan right before football season.

Then again, Kiss is #1 in the market now ahead of DVE... a CHR on a better signal might change that.

And consider CBS' recent actions in Boston, where they blew up classic hits WODS in favor of CHR "AMP 103.3" to take on the market-leading Kiss 108 - which, of course, like 96.1 Kiss, is owned by Clear Channel... Of course, the recent Star hire kinda qualms this scenario but you never know...

And how much could CBS conceivably lose if they move the Fan down the dial, considering the only major sports property they have is the Pirates? Keep in mind, the Cleveland board speculates that the Fan station over there might move from 92.3 to 98.5 based on performance.

I could see them swapping 100.7 and 93.7 bringing the WBZZ calls back to 93.7 and going full CHR to go up against kiss. But there is no way in hell they would move Y108. It has been recognized as Pittsburgh's country station for over 30 years. It would be like CC swapping DVE and 104.7.

Are the Pirates complaining about signal coverage on 93.7? Seems unlikely as I've never had
a problem getting them anyplace.

No, if they did this it would be about getting CHR off of the weakest signal they have, and figuring that signal would not hurt Y108 because the Frogs aren't really competition.

Not likely. KMLE does well in the ratings, and there is no content available for a 4th sports station in Phoenix unless it would become a 24/7 CBS Sports Radio outlet - dead from Day One. Plus "The Fan" is owned by another station in the market (KDUS 1060).

Stranger things have happened, but an FM sports station in Phoenix that's not owned by one of the companies that currently programs sports (Bonneville, Clear Channel, or Sandusky) is probably a non-starter. And it hasn't happened yet.

Coverage is fine.

The Fan is billing like crazy. As soon as they start filling late nights and more weekend slots with satellite programming, the bottom line will get even better.

They've succeeded in spite of themselves. Of the many bad ideas they've had, trying to go local almost 24/7 seven days a week is the worst.

story today about morning team being dropped from KMLE. This is a Phoenix format flip (try saying that three times fast!).

Washington DC, perhaps? They own a sports station called The Fan 106.7 in DC, and a Spanish-language station on 107.9 licensed to Annapolis that looks like it covers DC and Baltimore well. Frequency/format flip?

The local 24/7 concept has been pretty much universal for the CBS FM sports outlets everywhere, which is why they're now developing the national content.

It might be a good attention-getter when they launch, and it probably separates them from whatever competition exists in the market. But from a practical standpoint, it's just a very inefficient use of money.

1. They blew out Tim & Willy (mornings) just 4 months into their new contract.
2. They have a fledgling sports network they're trying to get on the map. What better way than a city-grade FM.

Not the first time CBS Phoenix has shown high-salaried guys the door and paid them to stay home (see: Pratt, Dave).

Other than their own network, there is no sports programming available in Phoenix. Most of the local teams are on Bonneville's KTAR 620 or FM 92.3 (a news-talker that is the Cardinals' flagship), as is not-always-live ESPN Radio. The Coyotes, games on Westwood One, Dan Patrick, and Jim Rome are on Clear Channel's XTRA 910 (KGME). The remnants (ASU baseball, Yahoo Sports Radio) are on Sandusky's KDUS 1060, as is The Fan brand.

Metro Phoenix is typical of Sun Belt areas in that most of us came from elsewhere - less than a million out of 4 million population are multi-generation Arizona natives. We do want to hear about the teams we grew up with and are still fans of (lots of Steelers fans here, BTW), but we follow our local teams too. Network sports radio is OK to a point, but even newcomers want to talk about the D'backs, Coyotes, Suns, ASU, and especially, the Cardinals (believe it or not - this is a football town). There are no local morning shows on the sports stations here, though. None have been truly successful since Mike Golic left KGME for ESPN years ago. CBS would have to have one, and with top, locally-familiar talent, to get a sports station off to a good start. Lotsa luck.

And no sports station will be successful without play-by-play - Bonneville has all of the locals locked up except the Coyotes and a few minor sports.

But we'll see what happens. My guess is still Washington for sports on 107.9.

I do feel bad for the local hosts in those slots who will go hours without a sober local call.

Not sure I see how that's a bad thing, other than overnights. I can't see 93.7 airing national programming during drive times (you might as well kill the station if you do that).

The new Tampa sports station also has Todd Wright, who has done some national work - but since Doug Gottlieb is getting the same afternoon slot on CBSSR that "Todd & Booger" has, I don't think the new Tampa afternoon duo will be national as of yet.
