I have a small piece of the old KMOX tower. The station cut it up & put small pieces in plexiglas cubes with the logo on top. Got it off their website a few years back. I also drove out to the tower site one time when I was in St. Louis to take a look.
Amen to that! Felix is a class act and I wonder if he is still with us. I know couple years back he was in poor health. Last I had anything to do with KAAY was about 1987 before it was sold to Beasley. The antenna feeder system at that time was the original from 1954 and there were no adjustments inside the transmitter building. It used rigid transmission line lengths and matching network phase shifts to set phase and current relationships. This was a common practice for that time and later, a hallmark of A. Earl Cullum et al, long time Dallas based consultant. Adjustments were a challenge due to the spread out nature and a natural phenomenon defined as “mutual coupled impedances” (every adjustment affects all others). After fifty years in-service, it is past time for a change-out. Twenty five years ago, it was still in very good condition Felix lived right next door and was meticulous about its maintenance. KAAY was the last Class 1-B on the air not far behind WOWO.
This was started 7/15/2009 in an effort to keep these memories alive, since the original blogspot was left dormant, after A. J. Lindsey ("Doc Holiday", "Emperor Holiday") passed away in May. Here's his original blogspot:
Several of us KAAY afficianados and enthusiasts have gotten together, gotten permission and will be putting forth an effort to further what "Doc" started. Most of us were listeners, others were deejays or did programming there...but we all were "there" when KAAY was the giant from Arkansas!
Needless to say, we'll look forward to seeing you and your comments there at the NEW mighty1090kaay blogspot!
