Today( Saturday 1/19/08) I turn the radio on AM 1090 and they was playing Classic soul ( Urban oldies Format, sound really good ),and during the commercial breaks, 1090 would say " Boston classic soul station 1090 W-I-L-D". But at the top of the hour , 1090 would say, " News Talk station 1090 W-I-L-D Boston ". At 3pm , a medical Talk show came on , Now I am really confuse ,about what the hell going on with this station ! Radio One Boston really know how to PH/KK things up !

I heard that today, too. I tuned in just after 12 noon. It was their Classic Soul format like they were a few years ago, but with no DJ. They also played the same song ("Ooh Child" by The Five Stairsteps) twice in the same hour, but it was good to hear the music again.

That wasn't a legitimate "medical talk show" that came on at 3:00 PM. It was a paid bought-time "infomercial" for a "citrus extract remedy" that supposedly gets rid of hemorrhoids and fixes varicose veins. Please!! I'm sure you could get more citrus in a glass of orange juice, and it's not going to cure those problems. That shows that they will take money wherever they can get it to air such garbage.

I forgot to check back after the "infomercial" to see if Classic Soul was back on. I wonder what's going to happen now? I hope they are going back to Classic Soul full-time (during the hours when they can be on the air).

I too was wondering what was going on when I heard "When Doves Cry" at 2pm.

Urban radio in Boston is back to where it was 10 years ago. I was hoping Radio One would divest of WILD and another broadcaster would pick up the format. Even an AM full time radio signal would be an improvement over WILD.

I thought WILD was doing the black talk format weekdays and gospel on weekends but indeed they
must be back to classic soul--at least on weekends. I too tuned in (around 11 am I was checking out
what was on my car radio and heard the "News Talk WILD" liner/ID--and then a song...)

Uh Oh....

Paging Scott Fybush.... Paging Scott Fybush... Please pick up the white courtesy phone!

Scott, maybe you can sort this out?

Some things are beyond my abilities to explain. AM 1090, increasingly, is one of them...

Gospel this morning until 1 pm. Then what appeared to be a talk program for an hour at 1 pm. From what I could tell since I wasn't paying much attention, it was about child molestation, so I think it was a legit talk program, not an informercial. Then classic soul starting at 2 pm.

Don't you suppose that they are trying to fill the weekends with infomercials, except maybe for Sunday mornings when they plan on doing Gospel and carrying services from any churches that are willing to pay for the time. Maybe the talk show in early Sunday PM is meant to appease anyone who might complain about a lack of public service on weekends. Then all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon, any time they don't sell would be soul--until the time is sold and filled with infomercials. It all kind of makes sense to me. If they can sell enough weekend time, I bet they will be at break-even even if they don't sell much of any time during the week. Clearly, Radio One's primary objective with WILD is not to lose money. I suspect they figure that if they can hold on long enough at break-even or better, station prices will eventually improve and they will be able to get something close to the exhorbitant price they are reportedly asking ($5 million).

I guess the big question at this point is if they'll be programming "Classic Soul & R&B" on weekedays. I think they'd be much better off with that than the talk. They should've gone back to the music format as soon as they sold 97.7.

Scott you have an excellent column, but don't over look the pirates in Boston. Legal or not, they are here, and they are kicking ass in the inner city neighborhoods that corporate radio choses to overlook. When WILD-FM dissappeared the pirates came in and filled the void. Yes, there were protests, but the inner city listener has lots of choices, and not many people are missing WILD-FM.

If WILD-AM is trying to make a come back ( Urban A/C or Urban oldies ), WILD better hope they didnt P--off there long time listeners . 106.1 The touch , may have most, or if not all, of the former WILD listeners .

Sounds like they're back to the regular talk programming. I guess the classic soul will just be heard on weekends.

Dude it's Martin Luther King Day. Major holiday in the Black community. Most urban contemporary stations do not have regular programming today. Let's wait and see what happens tomorrow.

Talk programs from at least 10 am (presumably TJ morning show before 10 - I wasn't awake yet) until 4 pm. But switched over to classic soul at 4 pm. This doesn't match the pattern they were following with the weekday talk/weekend gospel format, as far as I remember. I believe they had been running talk straight to sign-off.

Also, of note, the classic soul liners they are running are NEW. The old ones were not voiced by Rick Anderson as these ones are and these ones are saying "ten-ninety" instead of "ten-nine-oh" as the station was known for many years. I have just noticed that one of the liners says something to the effect of "Classic Soul, ALL DAY, 1090 WILD." Perhaps they really are going back to classic soul full-time (after MLK day today), who knows with Radio One!?

Also, they are STILL powering down before sunset, now apparently at exactly 4:30, and then signing off at 5 pm, approximately 10-15 minutes early right now.

And you base this on what?

"The Touch" may have some of them, but there are many areas where WILD can be heard where "The Touch" can't be heard, or can't be heard well. Not all of WILD's Classic Soul listeners were in the Boston urban neighborhoods! I often heard people in cars (including myself) listening to it in the predominantly "white" suburbs too. There are people of all colors who like Classic Soul!

One possible reason for WILD going back to Classic Soul is that Syndication One, the syndicating arm of Radio One which furnishes their talk shows, may be cutting back on it's programming according to some reports online. If you search "Syndication One", you'll find various conflicting reports on the internet about them, ranging from Syndication One cutting back, to perhaps completely shutting down, and also denial that anything will happen to them and that they're still going strong. There's no recent statement on the Radio One website about it, so it's hard to know if you can believe what you read from other sources.

And, the WILD website itself http://www.wild1090.com is "under construction".

WILD-AM website been under construction since 2006 , when 97.7 was sold . I find it funny how WILD-FM website is still up . http://www.wbothot977.com/home.asp
