1090 XEPRS Has Gone Back to Oldies Plus Wolfman - L.A. Daily News

If not one of their main signals, could one of Pacifica’s translators be up for grabs? Also, what’s the real likelihood of any of this coming to fruition? As someone relatively new to the area, this guy behind the 1090 oldies seems like a fly-by-night Saul Levine. All the dreams of grandeur but little of the follow through. Could this all just be posturing after someone dropped a fatter wad of cash on XEPRS to run their religious programming? “Oh yeah, we’ll I’ll just buy my own station in Los Angeles and play oldies there!” The barebones website still has an uncorrected typo that’s been there since it launched!
NONE of Marc Paskin's radio projects have ever lasted any length of time, or been successful. He reminds me of that blowhard who owns WABC in NYC. A lot of talk that doesn't result in anything of consequence. We'll see. And since it won't be of any consequence here in San Diego, I could care even less.

Why does not Pacifica sell KPFB, the little 460-watt station acting basically as a repeater for Berkeley and El Cerrito? The antenna is on top of the KPFA studios. In the "old days" it was used like a "super-powered translator" for KPFA, only breaking away for Berkeley City Council sessions as needed. With today's better radios KPFB is a waste of signal.
I think one good reason for Pacifica's KPFA/B to hang on to 89.3 is just in case a reactionary element in the US gov't decides that non-comms should no longer be permitted in the "commercial" part of the FM band. In the political atmosphere of this country today, it's entirely possible that the Billionaire powers that be, decide to declare a type of "eminent domain" over the 94.1 facility, as it's potentialy "depriving some 'person and/or corporation' from making money". And in addition like the current Administration's opinion of the USAID: "It's being run by a bunch of left-wing nut cases anyway" (or something to that effect).

What we know:

Paskin says he's done a deal to buy an FM signal for $4 million in the Los Angeles Metro.

He says his deal with XEPRS ends February 27, but he won't be on the L.A. FM until June.

Nothing filed with the FCC.

This has the hint of vaporware...an announcement that "the deal couldn't come together" a few months down the road.

Yet WABC gets excellent ratings for an AM station and seems to have a good roster of clients. That is not a good comparison as the owner of WABC is extremely wealthy and takes a great deal of interest in improving his stations.

That won't happen. Lots of religious groups have non-coms on the commercial part of the FM dial. They certainly don't want to upset them.

Ah, but many religious non-comms are making various individuals/organizations a bloody fortune. Not to mention quite possibly a political philosophy favourable to the powers that be.

True, although I was comparing Cats and Paskins in their remarks about future plans that either fall short of expectations (no full time Oldies on XEPRS), or never happen. We'll see if Paskins does actually purchase an LA radio station, and if Cats actually purchases another station in NYC.

The difference is that one of them can purchase not just one, but theoretically, all the stations in his market and the other can't buy even a gas station.

TomásEstefan: Please substantiate your statement. Maybe some links to their annual IRS filings. I think you will find a couple take in a huge amount of cash but most all barely get by or have budgets far below a commercial station.
