10NBC EQUALS DOUBLE STANDARD

Let me understand this right. The genius News Director at 10NBC decided to pretty much kill off sports, to destroy 30 years of what Rich Funke built up, so that they could scale way back on hilites and information that consumers can get from any number of mediums these days. So what does 10 lead with at 5pm on Wednesday? Breaking News, the Ramsey's are off the hook in the Jon Benet case. On a day when the Fair Plan met its natural conclusion, this is what this Magid poster child comes up with? Live, Local and Up to the Minute? Maybe if I live in Boulder. It's people like their News Director that destroy newsrooms, destroy on-air product, then leave the market and leave their station in shambles--sometimes taking years to recover from. What a shame!

Prompter. Wrong again. Maybe you have double vision. 13 led their 5pm newscast with Breaking News on the Ramsey case not 10. 10 led with some weather alert and then went to the FAIR Plan. Maybe it's time to get glasses.

I think 13 got it right. FAIR Plan is important- but boring. 13 spent only 20 seconds on JonBenet before moving on, but I bet that's the story people will be talking about tomorrow- not FAIR.

Just an opinion from this former old news hound, but I've always believed that the lead story should impact your local audience.

To you the F.A.I.R plan is boring, yet this story not only involves paying for funding of education, but also raises the question how the county plans to deal with a huge budget deficit. Right there that makes for good follow-up stories.

Meanwhile the JonBenet story, while interesting, impacts Monroe County residents how?

This is a no-brainer. You lead with Jon Benet. Seriously. It was developing just at the time the newscasts were coming on, it is a story that has captivated the country for like 10 years, and it is the "talker" story that viewers will be talking about that day. It doesnt have to be a long story, but it should have been the first story for all the stations.

Lead?

Jon Benet Ramsey's killer being found would be a lead. A DA's admission of "oops", not so much unless it's a REALLY slow news day.

I think this is one of those cases where you could probably argue every possibility to death, but in the end it doesn't matter because it's not a metered market, it's the July book, and as long as BOTH stories are fairly high in the show, you're pretty much covered either way.

On a serious note, either is a strong lead. Ramsey does have the water cooler factor going for it. FAIR, being local, is also significant, as long as you showcase it properly, so that viewers immediately know what it means to THEM personally, as opposed to the community at large.

This might be a good occasion to use the local cold open, followed by the old "but first, we have breaking news..." line, and do a quick blurb on the national item. Doesn't have to be anything extensive -- the networks will do that at 6:30. Just do enough to say you covered the story, and then move back to the local stuff people can't get on cable or on the network news. I frankly couldn't care less about the Ramsey story, but for me this would be a case where I would have to put my disinterest aside and cater to the tabloid-loving viewing public.

Generally, there's no real wrong answer.

I saw the alert on the wire about the Ramseys and only ever thought of it as just a file VO. Certainly worth putting on, but no way would I ever lead with it. Didn't even lead with in on the half hour (that was the police shooting). It's not like there was a lot of hype about DNA test results coming back in. Not like the story had been in the public consciousness in a long time.

Led with the FAIR plan for all the early evening shows. No real doubt in my mind about it.

Admittedly, I never got what was such a big deal about the story to begin with (I was away at college at the time and so did not pay as much attention to the news when it happened). Always seemed to me like one of those real unhealthy media obsessions with something potentially sleazy, perhaps out of my own disgust at the imagery of the girl prancing around.
