11 Alive's "Rundown"

I'm watching 11 Alive's 11:00 PM newscast and I am seeing this "rundown" bar for the first time. It looks like it's keeping track of the story's that they are covering during this segment. Anybody know what's up with this? First reaction: it's darn annoying!!

More screen clutter. I find it as annoying as the crawl, bug and whatever else they choose to cram onto the screen. I am not an idiot. I know what station I am watching.
I can use the EPG to see what's up next. I don't need to read the NBA scores while listening to "Try it before you buy it." I certainly don't need them telling me what story is coming up "next" (when it is really ten minutes away), or what I'll miss if I don't tune in at Noon, 6, 7 and 11.

I feel like I'm watching "Pardon the Interruption' on ESPN. The only thing missing is a timer and a bell.

I've asked this before and I'll ask again: Why does 11Alive suck so hard?

Actually...this sounds like this was inspired by ESPN and "SportsCenter" and other programs.

WXIA just introduced a segment called "Your Questions", where they answer all kinds of viewer questions. Just e-mail them, and Ted and Brenda might explain why they are using The Rundown on TV!

Haven't seen WXIA's rundown, but it sounds similar to what their Buffalo sister station WGRZ's had for several years.

Hmmm...I wonder why? It wouldn't have anything to do with Ellen Crooke, WXIA's news director, coming from WGRZ? Would it?

Gannett tried this at WBIR in Knoxville for a few weeks last summer. Viewers complained in droves, so they removed it. If you don't like it, let them know.

it is ok, but 11alive should your their HD format better. It would be neat to see it look like Fox News in HD or CNN HD with the side panels scrolling information. It seems that 11alive is trying to improve, but they need a drastic change in the way they present their news because it is too bland and boring. 2 and 5 have more local coverage.

Lighten up, Francis. ::)

Personally, I dislike scrolling information anywhere on a TV screen. I find it very distracting and downright annoying. Try to read it and you miss part of what is spoken. If you read the scroll and miss the beginning part, you don't understand the part that you read. I don't like to see it on a web page either. The rotating columns of links on the front page of Radio-info.com are very annoying. Try to click on one of the links and it has rotated to the next column.

I like the 11 Alive "rundown." I can't see how it could elicit complaints.

Also, remember this is what killed Headline News. In an effort to compete with Fox News Channel, and to distance the channel from CNN, Headline News was bombarded with insane crawls and graphics. It was rediculous and ineffective. Graphics, like spice, when done right, can enhance a story and program, but over-done can destroy the story. The focus needs to be on the what really matters: CONTENT. WGCL is a prime example that tried everything in the book except content. Now, they're focusing on content and are gaining ratings.

At least the rundown bar puts some basic weather information on the screen in some fashion, which makes up for the ill-advised deletion of the "forecast first" feature.

Otherwise, when it comes to the daily dose of desperation and train wreckery that is WXIA's news of late, anything they can put on the screen to distract viewers from the increasingly irrelevant and insipid Brenda Wood can only be considered an improvement.
