11 Years Ago Today May 31st 1996

It was a Friday, but not just any Friday... It was the day that the curse on 95.1 would be broke... I knew what the station was going to be by a commercial slip up, but not the time when it would happen... At 12PM for five hours we were treated to Princes version of Kiss as well as Tom Jones cover... Once the stunting was over at five PM Kiss 95.1 was born with the first song being Hootie and The Blow Fish "I Go Blind". Although the station had different owners once Infinity got control that was when things started to happen... They had a good solid line up of jocks and would make it to number one... Little did they know that they would have to watch out for a beating, but they took it like station could and now they are once ahead of The Beat... From what I gather since I no longer live there they did it by not making any knee jerk reaction to what was going on at 96.1 and kept doing what they were doing... Happy Birthday Kiss... CC1

There's really nothing quite like being there for the birth of a great station. These days, stations flip format so frequently that I think it's not as "special" as it once was. I was at the birth of a great station in 1983 and it's still a major station today (although I had to move on after Clear Channel took over). It's those really great heritage stations that hurt us so much when they're changed. I never worked at WFMX, the Country station in Statesville, but I really felt the pain of those folks when it flipped.

KISS FM is a great station that survived simply beacuse (obviously) station management doesn't have their heads in their a$$e$ when it comes to running a station.

It's succeeded because while the baby-boomers are dying off, the station appeals to what I've always understood to be the "core demorgraphic." (If the females listen, then the males will follow.)

I have a friend that worked there for a long time. He went to WSOC-FM and told me that he was told by management that he "graduated" formats. That's sign of good management to recognize hard-working talent and move them within the organization instaed of letting them go.

That's why 95.1 will succeed with this format. Go Ace & TJ

I remember the first time I ever heard Ace & TJ and I thought what the heck, but those guys really grew on me and I always liked to listen to them... I know they do Syndicated shows now so I don't know if that local flavor has been lost since I don't get to listen to Kiss much any more... Speaking of graduating how is Drew doing over at SOC??? I never met him, but remember the first time I heard him on the old Kiss 102 I knew he would be a good fit for QC radio... CC1

I was surprise about 95.1 The Edge's relaunch as Kiss 95.1 myself. I've recalled that in early 1996, The Edge drifted back to Mainstream CHR after spending some time as a CHR/Alternative hybrid.

Loved the Reelworld jingles and the VOs from Don LaFontaine and Eric Edwards at the time that Kiss first hit the air.

Like I said in the beginning post the only way I knew it was going to be Kiss was by a commercial that ran for a car dealership that said come and join Kiss 95.1 Sunday June 2nd... As for the Edge going back CHR that started on December 17 1995... It was a slow process, but by February they were full blown CHR once again... It was odd hearing Everything But The Girl into Trippin Daisey... Kinda weird... As for Eric being the VO guy I really liked his slickness with his imaging when Kiss first launched... Although the music was the same as The edge in its final days it gave Chancellor a chance to start with a clean slate and start laying the ground work for what Kiss is today... CC1
