1110 Finances

If 1110 has enough cash to continue playing country for months on end, would have thought they could have provided a break/discount to the prior programmer until something else could be found. Does playing country increase their audience or value somehow?
 
Certainly 1110 is in bad shape without a client for revenue. The station I run is brokered time. When you have one client it is a really tough call. Usually you cannot seek a new client until your present client is gone. It is such a risk you do offer discounts in hard times and you can be forced to take a percentage of the monthly rate. You try everything you can to help your client get back to good financial health because their financial situation is exactly what the station's will be.

I presume, based on my own experiences, 1110 tried to save their client. The reality is when they can't pay the bills, neither can you, so you have to make a call. If you choose to drop the client, you have to try searching for a new client. I've always said "Where do you look?" Think about that. If you are a commercial station you target new advertisers and try selling commercials to new clients. Businesses line the streets. They are easy to find. Where are the potential programmers? You have to hope they will call you.

Taking on a new client is much like dating. You don't 'click' with all of them. Many are unfunded upstarts that think you'll let them on for free and take a chance on their format working, feeling that a radio station makes money automatically by ratings, not revenue. Some easily accept any rate you toss out only to want the second month free because 'we need some more time'. Most are not able to pay your rate, thinking they can lease your station for a few thousand a month. Finding a truly financially qualified client that will understand both parties must have an attitude of working for each other's success is quite rare but sometimes you get lucky.

Playing the great classic country I've heard on recent visits is a fun thing to hear on radio but quite frankly, it is just filler to keep the station on the air until they can line up the next client.

I know one station owner that never does this (a format). He runs an hour loop of music with announcements that one can lease the radio station and offers the phone number. I have always thought this was best. It means hundreds of inquiries that go nowhere but sometimes you find that needle in the haystack a lot faster this way. I've always been amazed we in radio tend not to sell ourselves on the medium we sell.

In the meantime, 1110 goes without revenue and back-to-back 60 minute music hours...they'd play more, but they don't have the time.

Mr. Moss & Mr. Marti can pay that electric bill for a long, loooong time without having a client.

Didn't they get like $18M for the FM (or were they not the owner)? Seems like they should have had plenty of cash if so, but maybe they had that much in dept, I guess.
 
It was my impression the owners of KVTT sold the station and then leased 1110.

It would seem they would have had the cash to continue a good while. It might have been a question of how much money they were losing at 1110 and if there was any light at the end of the tunnel for them. Even if you have the cash, it doesn't make sense to keep going if you're likely never going to see anything but red ink.

I was saying 91.7 isn't owned by M&M, but 1110 is.
I must have read Charles 123 wrong.
I thought he said M&M bought 91.7
