1110 New Format

Although it is still technically licensed to Gaffney, a business decision was made for it to serve the Charlotte market rather than Greenville-Spartanburg. So the transmitting antenna was moved to the WBTV tower in Gaston County, also the home of 107.9-WBT. However it does still provide a strong signal into Spartanburg and Greenville counties, but unfortunately now they have allowed a religious translator to interfere from Greer. If their tower was still closer to Gaffney, this translator may not have been allowed. I get a reliable signal on my home radio in Spartanburg, and the HD will lock on. However in the car, in the Upstate, if you are seeking an adult urban format with more stable reception, you may be more likely to tune to V-101.9.

Appreciate the info. Thought some of that was the case, thanks for clarifying. By a religious translator from Greer, ya mean 'CKI's FM?

Roger on that, thanks. Is Fabian Fouintez (sp) still doing Sports there?

I don't really listen to Gaffney Sports games on WZZQ, but I have heard that name mentioned on the station before, and recently as well. Perheps you can listen online and find out more. They still broadcast on 1500 AM as well during the daytime, and the AM signal gets out a bit further than the FM. Otherwise, I would listen online via Tunein, their sports slot is on Friday nights.

Also, the old WAGI studio on Providence Road is now the home of WZZQ and broadcast tower for AM 1500/FM 104.3 as well, and Dennis Fowler still owns it.

Roger on that, thanks for the info/suggestion. I mostly remember him from his GWU coverage during Elon College Fighting Christians (now that goes back a ways) games.

It occurs to me that you're going to be sorry when 1110 does put its new format on the air, because then you won't have an excuse to use this thread to discuss all these other stations!

They'll be other threads. :D) Besides, this is still on-topic.

WNOK would like a word .
I checked out the Longley-Rice maps for WKQC and WNOK, and in that area south of Chester and Lancaster, those two stations would be bound to have a thumb war going on. Should two fairly high-powered FM stations on the same frequency be that close together?

Both were licensed before the current spacing rules went into effect. One of the two wouldn't be able to be licensed today.

Chester recently got a translator station at 104.5 (W283CY for WGCD-AM) .. It's a Nice R&B/Urban formatted station. What a unique situation setup to override the picket fencing interference / splatter from NOK and KQC, both only about 45 miles away.

I had a difficult time listening to what was then called EZ-104 when I lived south of Monroe.

There begins to be mutual interference with WKQC and WNOK even in parts of York County and Rock Hill. And WKQC does not even make it into Spartanburg, as it drops out as you get past Gaffney. But it does adequately reach most of the core Charlotte market, even better than the new iterations of Mix.

I cannot tell if the change of 107.9 from stereo to mono has helped boost the signal in the fringe. Seems about the same, both analog and HD. But it does look like they finally fixed the HD/analog fallback transition, which is good.

I was assuming that in York County, WKQC would be strong enough to override any residual signal from WNOK, but I suppose it's entirely possible. That is why I qualified by comments by referring to areas south of Chester and Lancaster. I'd say that down that far, it gets to be a real mess.
