1110 WNAR Music of Your Life

Hey Guys:

Would anybody know what date 1110 WNAR went from Beautiful Music to Nostalgia (Music of Your Life) from Al Ham?
Also when did Al Ham start syndicating the format to stations around the country. Info says 1978 but when in 1978?

Thanks
Tommy C.

You could search for Ham or Music of your Life in the trade magazines like Broadcasting, R&R and the others...

Hey David:

I did that. Searched through everything from your web site. Nothing. That is why I would pose this question on the board. Maybe someone here might remember.

I could be wrong, Tommy -- I usually am :) -- and I'm not from the PHL area.
Plus, I only caught WNAR a few times up near JFK Airport.

Thing is, I don't remember them being Beautiful Music. When I heard them, they were a quiet, comfortable MoR station seemingly content to serve Norristown, Conshohocken, et al. Next thing I knew, they were Gospel Highway 11.

I *do* remember the afore-referenced WTUX 1290 being B/M for the longest while. They'd sort of come up the coast, audibly grumbling all day underneath Long Island's WGLI. For a time, of course, the WTUX 1290 Delaware calls were WJBR.

Naturally, you have better recall -- vis-a-vis '1978' -- of any switch ........

I remember WNAR being beautiful music in the '70's but instrumental versions of more nostalgic standards type songs compared to WWSH playing instrumental versions of current/recent hits. It was voiced by syndicated personality John Doremus and played in blocks with commercials each quarter hour & local news on the hour. In the late 1960's they had run blocked program country, MOR & top 40 type shows - Super Lou, Ron Joseph, etc. I do not remember them ever using a service like Music of Your Life - if they did it was only as a music service because I only remember local personalities. And concerning being content, in the mid-60's they tried to upgrade their power to try & reach parts of Philadelphia & were turned down by the FCC (at that time very strict about local service areas). In the early 80's "Gospel Highway 11" was run as paid programming on summer evenings 6-8:30 pm until signoff & I think Sundays until they bought the station & went to that all day format in 1984.

We ran MOYL on reels in the late 80's. In the 90's Jones Satellite came out with a 24hr version. It had Wink Martindale, Gary Owens etc. The playlist was too deep and titles were more from the standards/songbook era. so we switch over to WWI's America's Best Music.

It looks like that is based on a subscription service now. I don't see much of a demand for terrestrial affiliates. I would like to know if any exist.
