1150WAVO Returns Adult Standards To Charlotte

Flipped from Christian programming.

5kw daytimer, 59 watts @night!

Fills the niche left behind from WNMX (Mix106.1).

Carolina Radio Network (CRN) will still offer Christian programming on sister station WHVN-AM (1240).

Artists like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald & Johnny Mathis will be part of the music rotation daily.

WAVO will also feature Frank Sinatra (hosted by Sid Mark) from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

"Big Band Jump" with Don Kenney will air from Noon to 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Music will be provided from the "bird" aka a syndicated satellite service.

IMHO, I love the station.

Opinions, comments, anyone?

Thanks

I have it on right now. So far I like. I'm glad to see someone is flying in the face of "conventional wisdom".

I know it's on satellite but does anyone know where they run it from? I would think that the WHVN/WOLS building is too small to run 3 stations. Maybe WCGC or WAVO itself in Rock Hill?

Tom Gentry must believe in the format.

This is good news, at least when I'm going to the beach.

I don't know whether I'll pick it up when I'm too far south for Country Legends 98.3.

Given my new car's poor AM signal quality, I probably shouldn't even count on it going to the beach. But I picked it up two years ago in my old car, which had a button set for a similar station in the Greensboro area at 1150. Of course, I could never pick up that station anyway.

I know Mr. Gentry felt strongly about the music 10 years ago when the chimps atacked.

From what I can figure out they are running the Jones Standards format on WAVO. I think they do a much better job than Timeless Classics, just my opinion.

I'm enjoying them.

I believe GHB has moved from using ABC's music formats on its satellite stations to using Jones formats: WAME in Statesville is using Jones' Classic Hit Country format and 106.1 WOLS is using Jones' Good Time Oldies. The only "holdout" is WSVM (Valdese), still using ABC's Timeless Favorites. BUT, I expect that to be changing very soon as the FCC approved GHB's sale of the station last week--which I STILL have not seen in our local paper (I've given up on calling them, jtudor!)

This is one area where XM is lacking "Jones Standards" is much better than "High Standards".

I wish WAVO had hourly news but I'm not complaining! How long have they been 5KW?

I picked them up in Wadesboro two years ago coming back from the beach. The Greensboro-area station that plays this kind of music is at 1150 so I had a button set, though that station's signal was never any good and I never seemed to turn it on at the right time to hear music, or if I did it was some form of oldies.

XM needs to take over this format. I can't see it working on AM/FM radio. It's too good.

I can't hear WAVO after power change at sundown. I wish they had put this format on 106.1 or even WHVN 1240. But that would be too good to be true. I agree, too good for AM/FM radio.

Great station. Wish they would up their signal too. I live east of charlotte and the signal is very weak. I think a simulcast on FM would be great.

I recall that when the Jones format made its debut, people complained about it being too AC. It must have evolved, because there's nothing AC here.

The amazing thing is the first standards station I remember in 1981 had AC.

Would you believe the music director of the format on WAVO contacted me by PM? That shows they care.

Yes I received a note too. The man knows his music. I wish they would put him in charge of "High Standards" on XM.

If he's reading this, I do have a correction to my message to him from last week.

I had another opportunity to listen. I don't normally think to turn on an AM radio during the day other than the one in the kitchen which is on the Paul Harvey/Dial Global station. This time, I heard two songs that would fit an oldies format but Chuck would not have called them standards. But as far as standards radio is concerned, that ship has sailed.

Now, as long as they don't do garbage like Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" or borderline garbage such as "It's Too Late" by Carole King ...

I've actually heard the first one on Music of Your Life, for some inexplicable reason. The second was on that format many years ago, soon after the Gary Owens version first started and I was lucky enough to live near one of the early affiliates.

I understand what you mean and can agree somewhat about the two songs you mentioned. I wouldn't call them anywhere close to garbage, burned maybe. There are plenty of other places you can still here them. The song that sets me on edge is "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" By England Dan and John Ford Coley, way overplayed!

If they stick with the standards, I'll be happy!

Well, I don't like the songs I mentioned. "You're So Vain" is too much of a rock song to sound good The one you mentioned is okay but I'd prefer not to hear it.

Get ready for changes. They are dropping Jones Standards and fold the stations into Dial Global's standards. Anybody know what they play? Are they any good?

I can take either of those, just please deliver me from Judy Collins "Send in the Clowns" The most depressing piece of garbage ever recorded. Even one playing of that is overplayed.

Is there a reason why the signal for WAVO has gotten weaker? I live east of charlotte and it was pretty good for a while. Now I can't get them at all until I reach south-west area of charlotte..

I like that one just fine. I find "It Was a Very Good Year" depressing. We all have our tastes.

But please, please, please, no "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion or "Wind beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler, if I could accomplish that.
I actually didn't list those songs when I sent a snail mail to the Dial Global music director. Wink Martindale liked the hideous "Titanic" song (does he have a daughter who's a DJ, because I think the girl's name filing in over the weekend of Dial Global was named Martindale. the Bette Midler song, unfortunately, has made it to Music of Your Life as well.
It's too much a part of standards to get rid of. But I insisted certain AC songs and artists be deleted from dial global's playlist.

I could be listening to WAVO right nhow, but I probably wouldn't get good results. You can read why here:

I'm going to have to edit that because that version of the address won't work if you're not a member. If you don't get scrolled down automatically, scroll down to August 5.

I have some bad news about WAVO if you haven't gone to the soft AC/standards board. There's no official confirmation but Jones has merged with Dial Global and only one of the formats will be used, according to one poster. Guess which format.

That's the correct address.

I could no longer edit. I let myself get distracted and now there are numerous things wrong with that post. This site is very frustrating. I didn't see a bunch of stuff I should have fixed because you have to click on the thread again to see what you've done. I could preview before submitting but sometimes that doesn't help either.
