1160/1190

After a few months as a soul oldies station, it appears that AM 1160 has given up that path, and is (as of midday Thursday) now simulcasting Mighty 1190's oldies format.

I recall this Summer that First Broadcasting was running print ads looking for sales managers for their Dallas properties, but I haven't heard a single spot on 1160 or 1190. Neither station has appeared on Arbitron.

Perhaps they should put some jocks on, marketing/promoting, Etc

What a concept huh?

I've heard several spots on 1190. They're not "spot blocks" by any stretch of the imagination, but I have heard them especially during drive time. Usually only one spot then back to songs.
______________

At the rate that First Broadcasting deals with job applicants, if they advertised for the sales manager position last summer, they might be ready to actually fill the position by next summer.

I also remember seeing several ads on All Access looking for a PD for a Talk Station in Dallas, with First Broadcasting. I assumed we would see yet another chat-box on one of those two signals.

Far as I can tell, those isolated spots belong to Clear Channel for letting "Mighty" use their Total Traffic service. The only moneymaker I've heard on there is the occasional weekend college football game.

Audiovault was cheaper than a talk show staff. And when you're planning to unload both stations, the bottom line is everything. First took off their 'stations for sale' list from their site, but I wouldn't take that to mean ANYTHING. Especially after doing the upgrades to move 1150 to 1160. Their track record is, buy it cheap, invest in the signal upgrades, and sell for a tidy profit. No reason to think this will be any different. Those stations are only on the air to give potential buyers a way to check on the coverage and sound. Once the market-busting sale price of 990 is long forgotten, they'll make a big push to dump both. Expect an Asian "Wok-and-(California)-Roll -dees" format next, with the probable new ownership.

The other possibility is that First is waiting for HD Radio/IBOC to take off, which will "SUPPOSEDLY" put AM stations on par with FM, driving up the asking prices.

May be that the reason for the simulcast is that First sold the 1190 frequency and wanted to keep the format on 1190 alive (for whatever reason) so they decided to move it to the 1160 frequency and this is the way they are making the transition so that the listeners they had for 1190 can get accustomed to the format being on 1160.
______________

Y'all are forgetting something here

First does NOT own 1190... or the rights to sell it. They're still LMA-ing it from CC. If CC decides "no we changed our minds we don't want to sell it after all" then First still has to carry through with the rest of the LMA, knowing full well they won't be able to buy it when the time is up. They would probably also decide that there's no use investing any kind of sales/spots/news people/other employees into the station if they aren't going to make any money with it by selling it.

Low bandwidth kills my enjoyment ---

I think its a good format - I listen some, but the 5 kHz chop off and IBOC self-jamming on 1160 is impossible to listen to. I hope the format stays on 1190 because at least the bandwidth is a little wider.

I would listen a whole lot more if either one were in C-Quam stereo, which still sounds much better than AM IBOC (I finally heard it). And AM stereo came stock in both of my cars, which are fairly recent models.

This is true...but there is still the very real possibility that First could be acting as the broker in the deal. We don't know. Consider what First is best known for and tell me again that there is not some sort of buy/sell arrangement in the works. First Broadcasting is not all about broadcasting, it is all about investing. You know...buy low, sell high.

I have just phoned all three 1190 listeners and told them to switch to 1160.
