1170 or 1180AM

This is rather sketchy, but here goes. I'm listening from the west side of Cuyahoga County (near Cleveland, Ohio). I was trying to tune into "The Savage Nation", which I know runs live on WWVA, 1170 AM at 6pm EST. I know that they had tower/transmitter problems. Well, On Tuesday 2-1-11, I heard a little bit of Savage, but overpowering him was a station playing Spanish music, with a Spanish announcer. Any idea what Spanish station I'm hearing?

Re: 1170!

It's definitely 1170 AM.

1180 also runs Michael Savage. I think that station is in the New England area, maybe Rhode Island, but I'm not picking them up at all. They may not start "The Savage Nation" until 7 or 8 o'clock EST.

The Spanish station you are hearing on 1170 is coming from North Carolina. It is WCXN CLAREMONT, NC running 10000 watts. They are supposed to be a DAYTIME ONLY station, but for many months, they have been operating at night, too. It is probably an automated station where no one is actually present to shut it off at night. I am surprised this has gone on as long as it has. I hear it very clearly here in Central Kentucky every night. If you listen carefully, you will hear them mention North Carolina and Charlotte from time-to-time.

Probably WHAM Rochester, New York. According to their website Michael Savage's show starts at 8:00.

Re: 1180AM

You are correct, sir. WHAM is the station at 1180. It's a bit interesting that they begin / play the first hour of "The Savage Nation" during its last actual "live" hour. I put "live" in paranthesis because if you listen to his last hour, particularly the second half, it often has all the markings of pre-recorded to begin with.

I am about 60 miles from the WWVA transmitter, and can no longer receive them at night.
They are overpowered by a Spanish music station. However, from online research I am pretty
sure this is a powerful station in central Mexico, not the North Carolina daytimer mentioned on this
thread. It sure is taking a long time for them to get back up to full power.

WCXN is a monster even up here in Michigan. I've heard them already dominating 1170 as early as 4:30 some afternoons.

Another 1170 to look out for is WDEK 'The Dock' from Lexington, SC. They have an oldies format which leans towards R&B and beach music. I've caught them on after-hours, but not as often as their northern neighbors in Claremont!

I have, too, identified the 1170 as WCXN; why it's heard at night, I don't know. I hear it at night and late afternoons in VA.

On 1180;there is another possiblity and the is the high powered Cuban station on 1180 put on the air to jam Radio Marti (broadcasting from Marathon,FL); the Cuban dialect of Spanish is spoken more rapidly than the Mexican dialect. At any rate here in St. Petersburg, not a trace of Radio Marti, as the beam their 100,000 watts south toward Cuba......... but I get the Cuban on 1180 very well day and night and when I was in Albany, NY in early September, much to my surprise, I heard them pretty well under WHAM 1180 and that did surprise me, that the Cuban signal would not only get that far north, but interfere with a station not all that far from Albany.

This was just around sunset just about 10 miles south of Albany.

I am also hearing the Cuban 1180 here in VA, and at night, both the Cuban and WHAM signals often fight over the 1180 dial position at night and WHAM is stronger at that time.

I guess considering my experience, that's not surprising at all. During my week in Albany, that was the only Cuban station I heard. It was so nice not to hear a Cuban station on nearly every frequency and to be able to listen to some of the stations like Zoomer 740 out of Toronto, the NYC 50,000 watters w/o the usual Cuban interference I encounter here.

That Cuban on 1180 interferes with WHAM at night where I am near Watertown, NY. I get a better WHAM signal during the day and at dusk.

Zoomer 740 is a great station. The clear path across lake Ontario from Toronto to Watertown makes the signal receivable 24 hours a day where I am.

Never heard of Watertown until a few years ago; now 3 families from Philadelphia NY reside near my parents' house, this time of year! Philadelphia is almost in Canada!

Zoomer 740 didn't come in, in Albany during most of the day, but beginning about a half hour before sunset they starting booming in; I'm wondering if this time of year with the shorter days if they might come in, in Albany?

I've never been able to get Toronto's 740 here, due to an Orlando 50,000 watt day and night (directional) sports station that throws a decent signal here at night. (I'm about 120 miles s.w. of Orlando).

Heard WCXN loud and proud at sunset here in N. Alabama... According to the FCC files, WCXN is only authorized 7700 watts daytime and 1000 watts critical hours. Why isn't WWVA all over this, since their evening and night signals are getting clobbered?

WCXN has been operating at night for many months now. They are like a "local" after dark here in Lexington, KY. I think it must be an "unmanned" station taking a feed off the bird and no one is there, or cares to shut it off at night...
