1180 makes its debut

W9WI, thanks for the response! Had never heard of educational AM, but have now. Seems like a good way to sit on a license, wait for a buyer, and pay no fees.

Most of the stations around here operating commercially pay about $5,000 a year per the database. Interesting stuff indeed.....

I heard Thaddeus say he could hear him self on the air and it sounded fine but he insisted the board op turn the caller way up. Then at the point of total distortion he agreed it was good. I could no longer make out much of what was being said. In retrospect not being able to understand is a blessing in disguise in this case.

I just listened to this for the first time a couple of hours ago. I can't believe anyone would put something that awful on the air. Of course it's off the air at the moment.

Watch yourself, or you’re going to find yourself off the air.

Engineering a radio station ain't like dusting crops, Thaddeus. Without precise calculations, we'd overmodulate the carrier, or dephase the array, and that would end your show real quick, wouldn't it?

I never thought I'd say this, but this is actually worse than WMQM or WLRM. I wish K-LOVE had kept the station or just shut it down. :p

Nothing Wrong on the transmitter side of the river......

Were they on late in the evening (10:30pm) yesterday? I heard what sounded like a carrier with a live mic, but it could have just been some weird form of jamming from Cuba. This was up in Turrell or thereabouts, I was thinking they were still on day power or something.

The way this station is being run, I'm beginning to root for the Cuban jammers!

The pattern and power switching is checked by dial up remote control ( by me ), even on night power/pattern you will hear the station in Turrell. I have no control over the audio that is fed to the transmitter and have no idea about the dead air and live mic.

OK I have to admit that the off air I heard was my fault. I hit a program button on my car radio but didn't hold it long enough to set, so when I pushed it I got nothing but noise and static. My bad.

Today Thaddeus was telling folks what they should write in their Arbitron diaries.

Thaddy Bear is a ticking time bomb.

Tick, tick, tick ...

I heard a spot advertising Margaritas, Wine and drinks by name, which used to be a violation of ABC code.

Well I finally figured it out what it sounds like. Thaddeus blues and talk 1180 AM sounds like someone doing remote reports on a phone line - - or out of a big tin can. It's hilarious and horrible at the same time. When is music is playing it sounds like somebody put a blues CD on a jam box and just stuck a microphone in front of it. Pitiful. Tinny 1180. At least it has no where to go but up. Just give me a couple of drinks and let me at that thing - I'll fix it for ya, Thaddeus.

Old Tom G - Still alive and kicking

Someone should tape this station before its gone and post them so everyone can hear. it sounds hillarious. I've heard some small town stations that were really bad, but this guy sounds like a laugh riot. i'm temped to drive up to memphis just to hear for myself. After the FCC yanks the license do you think he will blame it on "The Man"?

Just heard the online stream. Badly distorted. sounds like the level is all the way up. does the on air audio sound this bad?

About a month and a half ago I posted on this board about the 1180 radio abomination I heard while traveling I-40 heading back to L.A. At that time I ran a little smack about it saying:

Dude, get a clue, get a computer, and stream your Blues-and-Rant cast on the net. At least there, it might be listenable.

Again I say, excuse me all to Hell for trying to be logical. This guy can't even rant, sing the blues, and stream at the same time without sounding like a kazoo in a freekin' coal mine!

Repeating here just in case something's getting lost in the translation. Dude, Get A Clue! The good surfers do the North shore of Oahu to be The-man! Climbers do Everest! Drivers do LeMans! (oh that's right, in the South NASCAR is passed off as racing).

Earth calling 1180! If you want to be the man, you got to beat the man! Won't happen with tin-can sounding on-air audio and a clipped to Hell net-stream. Stop the insanity. Push "Plate Off" and click on "Stop Encoding" the first chance you get!

I'm Out!

They were drifting in pretty strong off Charlotte Pike / I-40 area of Nashville last night at 9:30pm... Whoa... I am a nice man and try to see good in others (when I can), but that audio was ten levels below Radio-Shack... Pleeeeeeeez!
