1180 makes its debut

So is the over the air audio up too loud? The internet stream is so bad it sounds like its running through a guitar amplifer with the distortion all the way up. Loud as hell. I can't figure out why people can listen to something like that. Its bad enough when people turn their radio all the way up too loud, but when a rado station does it, thats going too far.

The on air audio is running through what sounds like, and could probably only be, a simple POTS (plain old telephone service) line. It sounds awful.

The maximus is claiming the engineers will have him in Stereo either Saturday or Monday. The audio was so bad I would trying to to hear it.

In Stereo? Really?? Is he going to use 2 phone lines now?

Checked to see if he's in stereo or off the phone line this morning. He was playing a song about "drinking yo bathwater" and talking just to hear himself talk.

Still on the phone line and probably not stereo.

It seems they're off the phone line. I can't address stereo as I don't have an AM stereo receiver.

Sounds like I'll have to dust off the old AMAX Walkman next time I head up to the big city. (I just took it to LA and back and heard ZERO AM stereo stations.)

I wouldn't plan a special trip. It ain't that good off the phone line.

Got curious and listened today. This dont sound like phone audio to me. It even sounds better than some of the other am stations in the market. Did I miss something?

They changed it last week or so. It was a phone line for the whole time they started up until then. It sounds pretty distorted with whatever they're running now.

what a station!

I just noticed...

It has been six months since WPLX signed on with Thaddeus at the helm. Mr. Matthews famously posited the station would be #1 within that time period.

A email list to which I subscribe notes that WPLX has been heard the past few mights in spots like Indiana and Minnesota. Does anybody know if they are, indeed, dropping power at night?

Sure; it's POSSIBLE they might be heard at 26W, but it's unlikely -- especially on a battlefield like 1180.

Seems like everywhere on the east side of the US I've been, Radio Martí is the dominant noisemaker on 1180. If they're getting over that, something must be up. ;)

Was it with the 3.5 KW at critical hours?

But in any case a field strength meter and a quick stop at, say, Harbor Town on the river bank and you could find out.

Radio Marti is mainly broadcast to Cuba, but Cuba also has a station on 1180 that blast into the United States being used to jam Radio Marti which is in Marathon, FL. The noise from the cuban station is so bad that WJNT 1180 in Pearl, MS is obliterated and can barely cover it its city of license which is not that big. They had to add a nightime- only FM station a few years ago just so people could hear it. I'm surprised the Memphis station hasn't tried to do the same thing.

Isn't the WJNT-FM thing the only one of its kind in the US? It's certainly the only case of a FM nighttime only STA that I know of.

Radio Martí is highly directional south, but I've gotten it (either clearly or with Cuban jamming) all over the south at night. Heck, I think I got it during the day around Pensacola one time, but I don't speak the language and couldn't ID it.

It may show up in the FCC DB as just 50 kW but something tells me they're running a lot more power.
