I invite people on this New York board to read my post below (Percy, pull the plug on AAR). Unfortunately, it was moved to the News-Talk board where everything seems to become a political football.

This post is about a local New York radio station (WLIB). (I apologize if I did not make that apprent in the original post.) The post is an open-letter to the New York civic leaders who founded Inner City Broadcasting:
Former Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton
Former New York City Mayor David Dinkens
And New York 15th District US Representative Charles Rangel

The open-letter asks whether it is appropriate for these New York City leaders, in view of a scandal involving New York City and State tax monies, to continue a business association by which local New York radio station WLIB is leased to Air America Radio.

This is not about whether one agrees with viewpoints now expressed on WLIB (I generally agree, as I imagine Borough President Sutton, Mayor Dinkens and Representative Rangel - all New York City Democrats - do).

Please read the post and reply here with any WLIB and New York-specific comments.

One issue not addressed in the original post: WLIB is a station in the number one market with virtually NO local content. Is the licensee (Inner City Broadcasting Corporation) meeting its obligation to its city of license and the region?

For one counter-example, WLIB (via Morning Sedition) has had a guest appearance of every Democratic primary candidate for mayor, where each was offered the opportunity to make his case.

What other NY radio station can say the same?

AM stations above 770KHZ and below 660KHZ "don't count" due to interference from power lines and military radar. You have a right to be mad because WLIB is, and always will be a local station. It is very hard to find advertising because of the signal problems. My computer and ozone generator also screw up the signal. Even my TV set and cable box is enough to ruin the signal. I will try an RF filter on the power plug though, as WLIB comes in better with a battery powered radio. Just wait till they force IBOC on all of us. I suggest you try to get a job there doing sales. It seems in todays world the sales department has more pull than the program director. Very sad. I am also very angry listening to WNYC because they now "cow tow" to drug companies and liberal agenda. They just don't serve the needs of ordinary people.

Why not both sides?

Probably because this is about the primary election next week, and, uh, we have a Republican mayor who will presumably be the Republican candidate for the mayorship. No sense having a guest appearance from Bloomberg yet, until there's a Democratic nominee and Bloomberg in the race. Then it's a one-on-one contest.

You must not listen to the station during the overnights and weekends.
______________

Evan Cohen told the New York Sun that no one else at Air America was aware of the loans that he arranged while he was serving as an executive at both the Boys and Girls Club and Air America. He was forced out at Air America in May of last year. Air America is repaying the loans. How does this add up to anything approaching a "scandal" involving the current owners of Air America? And what, if anything, does Charlie Rangel have to do with WLIB?

Besides the fact that the Democratic primary hasn't happened yet, the Republican candidate owns his own radio station.
______________
