"12-12-12" Concert Will Be Everywhere

Re: Sandy 12/12/12 Concert Will Be Everywhere

Seeing a big problem with this one, unlike the post 9/11 concert that aired across all Viacom and Time Warner networks; the big networks are out of this. ION is the only broadcast network here, and HBO and History are the only true name networks airing it on their spotlight services. The rest are regular residents of Nielsen's 'hashmark' territory, while the main parent channels are foregoing it so they can carry their regular schedules or just plain odd choices like Bloomberg and Fox Movie Channel. Airing it on G4 and Destination America may as well be airing it on closed circuit television, and nobody with a respectful cable system gets Lifetime Real Women.

Hopefully there will be some shame that pushes it onto the main networks; something tells me MTV can throw out their regular schedule of Jersey Shore reruns easily, while VH1 really doesn't need the ratings 'numbers' of Marrying the Game encores.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the irony in what were once popular music networks taking a pass on simulcasting this concert - oh, but MTV will be streaming it live on their website! :-X

MTV: A once proud brand relegated to being just another purchased brand placed on crappy products, the way that "Crosley", "RCA", and "Sansui" are in 2012.

Stuff like this is exactly why I got rid of cable.

I know this sounds bad on surface but think about it. Why are they having a concert for Sandy victims when there is an AIDS crisis (yes it is still exists), a ongoing war on drugs to save our children and a huge population of homeless in every city in America?

I would dare say that a majority of the people that lost their homes in this storm had some type of insurance compared to those who lost their homes to Katrina.

Finally, celebrities may do this for free but I am willing to bet their PR people are saying "gone get your face out there and the money will roll in for you" and I am referring to concert ticket sales and albums.

I am all for giving but I my giving goes to St. Judes and Scottish Rite.

Wow, seriously, thanks for that.

Apparently, a whole bunch of Clear Channel radio stations throughout the country will be airing the special as well. All 5 NYC stations owned by Clear Channel, and mostly rock stations, but if CC has no rock station in the market, the closest CC station in the market to rock will air the concert. A complete list of stations can be found at the bottom of this page:

Clear Channel/I Heart Radio is one of the organizers of the concert based on what I've seen on the Facebook pages of Clear Channel owned stations. Variety Hit stations in Hartford and Boston are carrying it - The River 105.9 and 101.7 The Harbor respectively. There's on station on that list that troubles me though. ESPN DePortes in Georgia. Seriously? What the heck?

And in Milwaukee, WRIT, the Oldies station playing Christmas music instead of the "come on it totally makes sense" and higher-rated WRNW Radio Now (no rock station in Milwaukee)? Again it's looking like they're just throwing it on the lowest-rated stations or "overplaying the Eagles beyond death" rock dinosaurs on each cluster in most markets and calling it a day like the TV networks did. It's like this whole 'public service' and 'broadcasting' thing is beyond the grasp of media executives these days. And MTV did update their schedule...and replaced the Jersey Shore marathon with the groin-clipfest Ridiculousness ::).

New Jersey Public Television is also broadcasting the event as well. Makes sense since much of their state bore the brunt of the Sandy Superstorm. But since it's end of the year pledge time for other PBS stations, neither WHYY (Philadelphia) nor WLVT (Lehigh Valley) are planning on airing it. I'm not certain about the status for WNET (Channel 13/New York) or WLIW (Long Island), but it may be likely since they're also under the same umbrella operation as NJTV.

My theory is that, considering that the concert is scheduled from 7:30PM to 12 Midnight ET, the big 4 networks declined to carry the concert, as it would cut into not only local Prime Time Access, but also into the late 10/11PM newscasts and late night talk shows. Most mainstream networks (including the previously-mentioned History) have also declined to carry the special, for programming and/or scheduling reasons, placing most of its coverage on mostly premium and least-watched channels.

Once I did find out the length it did make more sense for sure. But again, it seems idiotic that VH1 and MTV aren't even bothering. Were people really going to be mad if The Challenge wouldn't be aired tonight?

I'm enjoying the show so far though, I'll say that. I'm watching it on Ion though so when a profanity was dropped, their version of censoring seems to be to reverse the audio completely in a jarring manner, while of course the premium channels let it go. Bizarrely, censoring seems to be on the network master control level for each network, rather than with the organizers themselves, so AMC/Bio/We missed it completely, while others blanked it out in time.

WRIT gets great ratings! At times, they've even hit #1, and that's WITHOUT Christmas music. WRNW, on the other hand, is farther down the pack, now duking it out with two other CHR stations in town.

Looking at the list, it looks like CC put it on the station closest to the major types of music played. The other choices are urban V100 and country WMIL. WRIT makes the most sense in that regard. CC doesn't have an actual rock station in town since flipping the Brew to Radio Now. As for the IHeart festival, that aired on Radio Now, as well as mostly their CHR stations.

And nice to see ION is airing it, for those without cable. Seriously, would they have done better with an 8 hour Criminal Minds marathon?

MundoFox aired it on a delay basis last night. In Phoenix, the local ABC affiliate put it on their .2 subchannel, pre-empting Live Well Network.

Live Well Network aired the concert itself, pre-empting their own lineup (and of course, the oddball 10pm infomercial slot they have).
