12 channel cable systems

So are there still any 12 channel VHF only cable systems left in the US? If yes, how small is the system?

In 2013, I highly doubt it. I DO remember when we had 36 channels here in Connecticut, before a major expansion in 1993 changed everything:

My city had those boxes in the early 1980s. Before the 1993 expansion I mentioned, our system went as high as channel 45, maybe 46.

I highly doubt it. Even in the most isolated parts of Northern Canada, the cable systems have more than 12 channels. There's a few with fewer than 30 channels though.

I dated a few girls whom lived "in town" back in the mid-1980's and the cable at their houses was then only 12 channels (including HBO). One girlfriend's parents had a living color TV that had the old-style knob-tuned dial--no remote. We also had such a TV, but were out of the cable service area so it was OTA only.

After further thought and considering the introduction of DTV I now really doubt any of these systems still exist in the US.
I know we still had 12 channels circa 1984 or 1985 and I didn't upgrade to the "box" until enough new local stations had signed on to fill up channels 2-12 leaving ESPN,CNN,WTBS,WGN, and HBO as the only cable channels left in the VHF band (1987-1988). When we finally got a cable box we went from 12 channels to 25 or 26 stations. I also remember that I could fiddle with the fine tuning on the VHF knob and get USA cable channel 23 on VHF channel 13 without a box. I guess it was just a coincidence that USA was on cable channel 13 before a new local indie signed on and took that spot bumping USA to CATV channel 23.

I guess we really had 13 channels in the VHF cable days as Nickelodeon and A&E shared channel 12 with Nick on in the daytime and A&E at night.

Sekiu, WA had a 25-channel analog system, with only 4/5/7/13 Seattle, 2/8 Vancouver and 6 Victoria, BC for networks. Didn't offer MNTV, or CW. WGN America was on Channel 11. No CMT either, had GAC on (I think?) channel 24. It may be gone however.

Is it safe to assume people living in the areas with the 24 and 40 channel analog cable systems listed above have access to Dish/DirecTV at minimum?

When I made the first post I was thinking someone would come up with a small system in a valley or on the wrong side of a mountain where the subscribers had no other choice, not even an option for OTA television.

Know of anywhere in the lower 48 that has no access to cable, sat, or OTA TV? Or perhaps has access to analog or SDTV translators but no access to broadcast HDTV?

According to the FCC the average number of channels on a cable system is 80. The FCC states 90%f of US cable systems offer full range of services including Internet, Telephone service, DVR and pay per view.

I would think there still must be a few small towns that have some kind of 12 channel service left.

I also would think there still must be a few "motels" that have some kind of 12 channel "cable" left--wouldn't shock me in this Lodgenet day and age.

Why can't they just put KMSP/9 Minneapolis or KQDS/21 Duluth on ch. 14? Signal issues?

Probably not that, but Fox's annoying issues with carriage of out-of-market affiliates. Charter lost WLUK from Green Bay on systems which also get WITI in Milwaukee because of the network's ridiculous contracts which only allow viewership in each market with in-market affiliates. WLUK had to go despite their good local programming, which I found completely annoying as it wasn't the fault of WLUK or Charter there, but Fox itself. Remer seems to be in a no man's land where its stuck in the MSP DMA and the system can't grab the Brainerd translator of KMSP, nor either of WFTC's full power signals.

I remember some of the old 12 channel systems here in Pittsburgh in the late 70's had an
issue when WPTT-22 signed-on. The only spot on the dial available for them was Channel 13.
But WQED put out such a powerful over-the-air signal on 13 it caused interference to the point
of making WPTT virtually unwatchable on most systems.

21 doesnt reach there (well there is a translator in Grand Rapids but its analog). Closest affiliate is a translator that Leech Lake TV has now in Walker. Channel 21 31 miles away but rabbitears shows it too far away (yet tvfool says outdoor antenna needed)

"Philipsburg Cable TV" in the small western Montana town of Philipsburg is still listed with the FCC as being an active cable system, though I have some doubts about the accuracy of that information. The only online evidence I could find is the retransmission consent letter KTMF-TV sent to the operator of the system for the 2012-2014 retransmission period (see page 23 of the PDF here).

Anyway, enter the town's ZIP Code, 59858, into TitanTV, and the following channel lineup appears:

2 - HBO (West)
3 - KTMF-DT2 (Fox) Missoula
4 - Spike
5 - TBS
6 - CNN
7 - Local weather
8 - KPAX-TV (CBS) Missoula
9 - ABC Family (West)
10 - ESPN
11 - WGN America
12 - KMGH-TV (ABC) Denver
13 - KECI-TV (NBC) Missoula

There used to be some other small town cable systems in Montana that did not extend past channel 13 up until only a few short years ago, but FCC records seem to indicate they have all been whittled away to just this remaining system, which, again, may not actually still be in operation. I imagine most of the other systems met their demises due to the satellite operators and declining small town populations. Even so, to this day there remain several cable systems in rural Montana that contain fewer than 40 channels, all in analog.

Here is another possible one. Easton, MO

Used to be St Joe Cablevision ut now its supposedly Suddenlink.....yet the SL site wont print a channel lineup
