#1 KODA - As was mentioned Sunny has got to love Christmas. After reading the thread about Sunny the other day I listened to KODA for 24 hrs which is the first time I had listened to the station for more than an few minutes in a long time. Sunny has finally made it into the year 2000, maybe 2001. The music was much more in line for a light rock station and Sunny had dumped much of the old crap they had played for the last fifteen years. Played some very good songs and I liked their choice for the light sound, newer artists with songs that were new to me. Liked their jingle package also. Sunny isn't the boring station that it was musically, but, always the but, the music improved 100% but it seems that Clear Channel stripped all the on air talent of any personality. Even Zoe Bonet at night and Dana Tyson the next morning seemed very flat and just there. Play the music and shut up most be the new motto at Sunny. It's one step forward and one step backward. If you just want music you don't bother with the radio today. Clear Channel has some excellent on air personalities that should be a part of the music and not just reading liner cards. If Clear used both as part of the show Sunny would be close to being one of Houston's really good stations, something we have very few. I wonder if CC will get it right?
#2 & 3 Majic and The Box - who else, Radio One knows radio.
#4 Estereo Latino KLTN - the field of stations for the Hispanic listener has gotten pretty large and while KLTN is way out in front, it looks like their days of being the number one 12+ station are over. Yeah I know, no one gives a rats ass because these numbers don't mean a f'ing thing.
#5 Who else?
#6 KILT FM100 and The Arrow tie this spot. Both where they belong.
#8 Clear Channel in it's own three way for #8 with Mega, The Buzz and the station that used to be news on 740. I think Mega is here to stay. The Buzz has not been beaten by The Arrow in the last five Books. There is only 0.1 between The Arrow and The Buzz in Phase 1, will The Arrow beat The Buzz in the Winter '06 Book? 740 - who cares? You have to give Clear Channel credit though, five out of the top ten stations belong to Clear.
#11 Party KPTY and LBI's KTJM/KJOJ (can anyone that lives in the city actually pickup KJOJ well enough to listen to it?) tie. Univision down 0.2 and LBI up 0.2. Meaningless.
#13 Another tie, this time Mix and KOVE, I read David's post and KOVE is actually doing much better than #13 suggests and I expect KHMX will drop now that Sunny is done playing funeral dirges.
#15 Yet another tie, this time KHJZ and up 0.5 (they can thank Sunny for that) and KPRC, a station that just keeps bouncing around. Maybe KHMX and KPRC are the two throw away stations at CC. I know they can do better with both.
#17-18-19-20 As was meantioned earlier, all belong to Cox. Shows you that when you really try and put some effort into your stations you will pull great numbers. In all reality Cox doesn't deserve to be up this high in the charts. Three of the four stations have real potential if there was somebody home. One station has been dead for years but no one in town to bury the corpse. For God sake sell the damn stations to Cumulus, they need the frequencies and Cumulus puts a lot of effort into their stations, I'm sure you could have their 97.5 and 103.7 frequencies as part of the deal if you want to stay in Houston and annoy us some more. Yes Cox you did have the first HD station, big whoop. Where do you even buy a friggin receiver? Stopped at a large store at the corner of Voss and Westheimer that Ibiquity list as one of the companies that sells HD radios. Not this store. At least the man I talked to in this store knew what I was talking about when I asked if they carried HD/Digital Radios. The answer was don't carry either auto or home and no plans to do so at this time. Three other stores that should have people that have knowledge of HD radio had a blank stare when asked if they carried HD radios. I even explained what HD radio was, still a blank stare. There must be some stores in Houston that carry HD radios, if not, HD radio is dead already. The fact I have gone to four major electronics stores and not a one carries or plans to carry HD radios does not bode well for Ibiquity or HD radio. But then that is for another meaningless post.
#21 KILT-AM versus #31 KBME-AM in the Sports radio race. KILT is still pulling away from KBME, in fact KBME has helped KILT in the 12+ ratings, not hurt them.
#23 KROI time for Radio One to give it up on the Hispanic market and program what they are known for, great radio for the Black Community. It's way past time to switch to Urban Gospel. I just can't believe that Radio One will not give up on a lost cause. They would double the ratings overnight with Urban Gospel and would do about the same as they are now with the new Black Talk Network they have. KROI going Black Talk would be a hard sell against KCOH 1430 who has been doing the same for years and does a great job.
#24 KIOL I like this station and think that it is getting better. Well I was until their latest stunt "Little Miss Titties" or whatever. Rock 103.7 has been very involved in the community and the staff gives 110%. They really f'd up though with the latest contest they are running. I have a feeling that the station would love to find a way to end this contest yesterday and pretend it never happened. I'm glad these ratings don't mean anything because if they did I don't see a future for Rock 1037. I like Walton & Johnson, but if they think so much of New Orleans Mardi Gras and so little of Galveston's, why don't they move their show back to Chocolate City? They could have done a lot more for the City of Galveston and the Madri Gras there, but chose to down play the great Madri Gras that Galveston has, which is part of the Houston market. I realize the show is carried in Baton Rouge and Lafayette also, but they could have given Galveston some much deserved positive attention.
#25t I mention this because it is KCOH 1430 a station that many probably don't even know exists since it is on AM and has mainly inner loop coverage at night. It is one of the most underrated stations in the market. It finally broke out of the zeros to an even number. A great News-Talk station for the Black Community during the day and fantastic music at night for anyone. Unfortunately their signal in the Galleria is not all that great at night, even with the radio on it's side with a loop antenna and a candle burning.
#32t At the very end of the list is KFNC, The FM News Channel. I know the signal sucks, but the are streaming audio for some time now and it is a good news station. Maybe they need to go all News from 5am to 8pm and save the Talk for nights or just go all News. Maybe Houston is city where the citizens are not interested in the news, at least on radio, but I find that hard to believe. I don't know why KFNC is still rock bottom, any thoughts?
And another chapter has been written. Time to wake up.
