12 News Changes

Emma Jade returns as co-anchor of Today in AZ starting 1/6. Emily Pritchard is out. Plus, Chtis Dunn will be joining as weekend meteorologist, transitioning from freelance to a permanent position.

Now, they just need a permanent traffic reporter...

By the way, I just saw an ad that 12News Today will be expanding at 7am, on the 12+ app. They didn't say how long the 12+ version would be . It's definitely an interesting experiment to see how much of an audience they will get on the app.

If it takes too many viewers away from The Today Show, I would think NBC might have something to say about it.

Wouldn't be surprised if in other TEGNA-owned markets they're doing this or kicking the tires at doing it considering how much they've propped up recently their utilization of a streaming "+" platform for their stations.

I know that KING (TEGNA) in Seattle has a "+" app. Also, they have a long-running 2 hour extension of KING 5 Mornings on sister station KONG.

@KeithE4, this newscast has been on for year on KONG. If NBC has complained, it has fallen on deaf ears!

Has anyone seen Lauren Rainson the past couple of weeks? She has dropped off the 12 News Meet The Team page (but it could be just be work on the website).

Well, TEGNA did go through some layoffs at all their stations in the past couple of weeks. In Seattle, they laid off one of the evening anchors. I guess, in Phoenix, it was Lauren Rainson.

TEGNA has been gutting the staff at all their stations the past few months, a process that will continue throughout 2025. Once completed, each station will consist of a stripped down news department and little else, as other functions have been hubbed, centralized, outsourced, replaced by AI or eliminated.

Sorry, yest, I mistyped. I meant to say months, rather than weeks. They are definitely restructured their stations.

I read that recorded weather forecasts may be part of that change. KPNX is, of course, leading the way -- at least on Saturdays (until/if Lindsey Riley comes back from maternity leave). And it looks like they may have canceled their Sunday morning newscast (once again).

Apparently, 12 News has canceled Sunday Today in AZ. It hasn't been on in several weeks. Future listings show Paid Programs running in that timeslot (8:30am to 10:00am or so). I guess that was part of the corporate cutbacks.

Noticed this morning, they had Krystle Long doing the weather.

As of yesterday, Lindsey is back at 12 News. Lindsay Riley

As I was watching12 News last week, it seems that Chris Dunn worked at least nine days in a row. He worked the weekends and subbed for Lindsey all week. None of the other forecasters could relieve him for at least one of those days? Anyway, kudos to Chris for hanging in there.

Iron man, especially after doing yeoman's work filling in for Lindsey while on maternity leave. Beats having to resort to broadcasting a forecast from a sister TEGNA station which others have resorted to.

And, to Chris' credit, it appeared that he did his forecasts live, because another trend is to record the forecast and go home early. For example, it would have been easy to record the forecasts for the 10opn newscast, so he could leave at 7pm.
