12 NEWS EVENING EDITION CHANGES

Has anyone seen 12NEWS EVENING EDITION at 4:30 , 5:00 , and 6:00. The newscast they do are more inform ative ,and include on-line participation. They also move the newscast very fast, informative ,and down to the point. They also move there anchor staff around the set so much it's hard to tell where they will be on the set. For me I switched newscast around to see who gives me the most informative news ,and I will tell you lately I've kept my tv set on channel 12 for news lately. 3TV NEWS lately has Patii Kirkpatrick fumbling words ,and is a totally dull newscast. CBS 5 NEWS has changed so much since Diane Sullivan left ,and for the team now Kent Dana (should retire) Catherine Anaya and Kent Dana together doing news is so boring. For FOX 10 NEWS no changes same HOOK and LAKE doing the news there. For ABC 15 NEWS they must be trying to save some money because either Steve does the news by himself or Katie does the news by herself. They don't do the news much with both of them on together on the air. So all you out ther tell me your opinion on all are local phoenix television news stations.

Here's what each station should do to be competitive:

3: Get rid of the fluff and focus more on Northern AZ (underserved) and world (underreported) news (think BBC). Don't touch mornings or midday timeslots, expand evening news to 4:30 to 7, and add a 10-minute 10pm news (think WLAJ). Change brand to NewsChannel 3, Action News, or Channel 3 News.
5: Refresh their news team or do something that catches the market's eye. Promote the heck out of your upcoming 60th birthday, KPHO; you'd make a mighty fine special.
10: Get in HD. But watch, WTVT and a whole slew of Fox O&Os are going to be in front of them in the HD line.
12: Get the promos advertising HD in actual HD. Also, I see an idea to get a 9pm news on someone like KAZT that has respectable coverage and isn't a rival.
15: I really don't know; 15 seems a little dusty to me.

If they got rid of the fluff, they wouldn't have enough news for more than 30 minutes, which is exactly how long a single newscast should be. Keep the newscast at 5-5:30, then an hour of features from 5:30-6:30.

5: Refresh their news team or do something that catches the market's eye. Promote the heck out of your upcoming 60th birthday, KPHO; you'd make a mighty fine special.

What is the difference between commemorating their 60th anniversary and their 50th? Their glory days as an independent were prior to their 40th anniversary (1989). The've done little of note in the last 10 years. CBS is CBS is CBS.

10: Get in HD. But watch, WTVT and a whole slew of Fox O&Os are going to be in front of them in the HD line.

American Idol BS highlights in HD? Big whoop.

12: Get the promos advertising HD in actual HD. Also, I see an idea to get a 9pm news on someone like KAZT that has respectable coverage and isn't a rival.

Why would Gannett want to compete with itself, especially when NBC has a lot at state with Leno's show at that time?

15: I really don't know; 15 seems a little dusty to me.

Isn't Scripps close to bankruptcy (at least I thought I heard that)? Maybe a new owner would turn that station around.

Re Keith:

5: WTVJ did something like that just recently. And they've been owned by NBC for 21 years!

10: I mean their news. Network stuff is in HD.

12: WRTV did it before. Even WTVD, an ABC O&O! But they didn't have Leno to deal with, so...

15: Scripps? Chapter 11? Who would you rather see own 15?

So did I. American Idol garbage is a major part of all Fox newscasts.

Interesting...12 could produce the "Northern Arizona Nightly News" on KAZT at 9pm and repeat it on KNAZ at 10pm (seems like they used to do something like this in Flagstaff) :D. They could put a VJ in the KAZT studios in Prescott and, together with their VJ in Flagstaff, put together a Northern Arizona focused newscast.

I think Northern AZ is underserved horribly...and 3 or the 7-2 idea mentioned (not 7.2, 7 and 2) would be the best places to put a newscast for them.

The other underserved area is Pinal County, and KCAB-LP (which needs a graphic makeover) is their only newscast. They're an LPTV and their OTA viewership will dissipate with the transition.

I actually miss ch 12 up front at 430 = loved getting the top 12 stories of the day really fast when I got home from work.

Don't sing a requiem for KCAB yet. They're carried on the local cable systems, meaning the digital transition will be meaningless to a majority of their viewership. Plus they've already made a request to reclaim channel 47, from where they had broadcast for six years via STA before having to move due to KUVE Tucson's pre-transition operations. Now that KUVE is moving back to channel 46, 47 will be clear again. They're looking to put their transmitter north of the city, on the same peak where AZTV's K43CO is located, and with a 15 kW digital signal, they should put a good signal into much of Pinal county, including the Maricopa and Johnson Ranch areas, plus into parts of the Phoenix metro area - specifically the SE Valley.

I don't like what channel 12 does at all on their news. I don't want to hear what people on the Internet are saying. News is news, not Opinion. I'm even against the practice of interviewing neighbors and getting their reactions to someone who did something bad. If you can't fill your 90 seconds with information get out and put on another news item. Quit running the same video again to flash out more meaningless story.

I don't like channel 12's news readers, either.

The field reporters on all of the stations seem so amateur-ish. Damn, the whole broadcasting industry sucks. Nobody can get experience at local radio as in the old days and then be a better talker when, and if, they graduated to a big city TV station. It's like Tom Snyder complained about one night on his Tomorrow Show, he said broadcasting needs a farm system like baseball to give people a chance to get better before they hit the big time.

I figure channel 12 has to add the internet stuff to fill time because they don't have many reporters anymore to go after the real news stories.

Also, they finally figured out a way to give the people who think the news is too sad a happier newscast. Score one for those lousy consultants!

That's my two cents.

People laugh at "Anchorman" and stuff like that, but I miss the days when radio and TV news reporters were taught to have a distinct 'announcer' tone to their voices.

Hi allthatisdaveaz,

As you can tell I miss the days when people could actually fill a report with useful information that I wanted to hear! Or, that was worth hearing. ;-(

Mike --

Your observations are interesting because I actually think that 12 is one of the few that doesn't annoy the viewer with internet references. 3 TV is driving me crazy with Twitter and Facebook references!! It probably depends on the specific newscasts that you are watching.

As a sidenote, I'm beginning to think that Jayme King on Fox 10 is the best, most insightful meteorologist in Phoenix. He actually seems to know what he's talking about and gives insight into the upcoming weather -- e.g. potential monsoon pattern by Thurs or Friday. In contrast, Caribe saus tjat there is no potential monsoon pattern in the next 7 days, but she did a heck of a job reading every temp on the AZ map! :D

Right, I hear the Twitter and Facebook references, too. What gets me is Channel 12 puts on the comments people have made about news stories on the air. Note to channel 12: I don't care what people are saying about the news stories, just are the friggin' news!

If I could stomach a whole channel 12 newscast I'd log every story and comment, commercials, and whatever, and see how much time is devoted to each useless catagory.

You mentioned the weekend weathercaster on channel 12, or at least it looked like it. I was going to say something about the female newsreader on channel 12. "Yeechhhh!!!!" I hate her voice and her vocal inflections. I feel like I have to reduce what's left of my IQ to near zero to listen to her read.

Channel 12 must not be making any money on all of those commercials I see...oh yeah, wait a minute that money goes to the stockholders. How silly of me.

Another two cents thrown in.

You're probably referring to Kim Covington, the weekend anchor on 12 News. I actually enjoy her intonation, but I totally agree that it is a bit different (and understand your issues with it). I happened to grow up in an African-American household and her inflection feels very comfortable to me.

I must say that she did push me off the deep end a couple of weeks ago when Bea Arthur died. She pronounced Arthur as "Author" at both 6 and 10pm, which had me ROTFLMAO!!!

Don't even get me started on the Tram Mai "valley girl"-speak topic! :D

No one has mentioned the Crown Jewel of 12 News speak: Melissa Gonzalo! While she's gotten a little better, it's worth watching just to see what word she'll mangle!
;D

12's ratings dominance is astonishing as NBC tanks. With NBC in the ratings basement, 12 will have to work harder to keep that ratings crown.

With that said, neither 5, 10, or 15 could take it in their current state. I wonder how 10's ratings are doing being in SD still.

5 and 15 are OK, but someone I know thinks 3 and 5 are the news for old people. I think 15's problem is just being 15.

My dad and I had a saying when you had bad anchors inexplicably anchoring a newscast: "S/he must be paying them to anchor this newscast!". Melissa is so bad that she definitely falls in that category. She needs to go to Yuma and practice for a few years.

First, in an earlier post I said, "Just are the friggin' news." Of course, I meant to say "Just air the friggin' news." I was worried about spelling "friggin'!"

With the discussion of "Happy talk" news and all of the problem people, I remembered a lady that worked for a local station who read news and co-anchored an hour-long news headlines and interview program. She worked mornings.

At that time, news reading was serious and no editorializing on stories or any kind of comments were allowed. While she co-hosted the interview portions of the show she was fine, but her "serious news reading face" was down right scary. I couldn't stand watching her, but I could listen to her okay.

Well, that's the last comments I'll make on this subject. With the two cents I've just thrown in I'm out of money. ;-)
