12 "News"

I sincerely don't want this to degenerate into a political debate. My point of view here has to do with news judgment.

On Tuesday, July 17th, the 10 PM lead story on 12 News was: A look at how the villain of the new Batman movie is named "Bane" and the coincidence that Mitt Romney founded a business called "Bain". Ha ha. Isn't that funny. Mitt Romney is evil. Thanks for watching. You've now been informed.

12 News took a notion, that people will somehow see a freak villain (who's been part of 'Batman' lore for decades) and think to themselves, "Hey, that reminds me of Mitt Romney. He owned a business with the same-sounding name, so he must be a villain, too..." Of course, some politicos have sought to make that very connection, and that's all well and good since political campaigns have to find a clever hook wherever they can.

But why is this the lead local story? The good folks at 12 "News" are merely doing the job of a political operative. It ain't news, that's for sure.

Save me the screeds about the evils of FOX News or MSNBC. I welcome opinion commentary from the right and left and MSNBC and FOX do a lot of that. I don't expect it, nor do I want it, from what is supposed to be a straight news product. 12 "News" has an agenda, so they should admit it.

The OP has discovered a reason I don't watch "12 News", ever. And haven't for years.

But this story was on most if not all of the local stations this morning.

I took the story in a totally different light. I assumed that Romney was upset that the "liberal Hollywood Elite" were making fun of him. I thought that conservatives were very upset and promoting this view of liberal Hollywood.

In any case, one story (that can go both ways) is a SILLY reason to not watch a newscast. I tend to avoid 12 News because they have degenerated into a trainwreck -- trading perfectly good, solid journalists for lazy, inexperienced young people with annoying voices.

I didn't see it on the one I watch.

While I suppose a number of different views could be expressed on this story my point was that the story didn't belong in a bonafide news program at all. It was nothing more than Jay Leno humor and had no news content at all.

I grade news programs on their content, not on their personalities although I agree some are easier to watch than others and an anchor who bobbles his/her delivery wouldn't earn my long time viewing. I have found, over the years, that 3 and 5 seem to contain more actual news stories than the competition although 5 could be accused of excessive over-promotion and weather reporting (ex: multiple segments per program).

Rush Limbaugh has been talking about this for a couple of days now.

No point being made...just an observation.

I'm not a Rush listener but I have heard several descriptions (and seen his actual video) of how he treated this story and it goes to show why Rush should not be considered any sort of journalist.

He first broadcast a piece about "Bain vs Bane" and wondered aloud if this wasn't some sort of conspiracy by the DNC/White House/Obama campaign. That resulted in widespread criticism of him so the next day he tried explaining that he hadn't said those things. Videotape doesn't lie however and he did say those things and was caught with his pants down. I quit watching this story at this point but in all probability, if he is still blathering about it, he is either still trying to deny his earlier statements or going on the attack and trying to obfuscate the story entirely. Either way....he blew it.
