1200 confirms format change - but won't say what it is

Wednesday's Herald

http://bostonherald.com/news/column...akker_humbled_by_support/srvc=home&position=2

Mary Menna, president and market manager for Clear Channel Boston and Providence, called Severin and Katz “wonderful” employees but said a format change was on the horizon. She wouldn’t divulge any details.

“It is really about a format change that we think will be relevant to the Boston market,” said Menna, who wouldn’t say how many other Talk 1200 employees were let go this week. As for moving to 101.7 FM, Menna said only they “considered a number of different options and we chose the option that was the best fit for the market.”

They chose the format for the new FM that will make them heaps of money with little expense.

Kind of amusing all the arm chair experts and the grand schemes for foreign language, a fourth major talk signal, blah blah blah.

Funniest line of commentary came from the crowd that called it a stunt.

I would not be shocked to see CC run oldies on 1200 with the occasional 'guest' jock - that format could pick up a cume ( yes older ) but still would attract more people than syndicated sports babble.

We know that 850 will soon be ESPN Radio - FSR is a very weak network, NOT promoted by the TV side at all. The only major market where they have traction is LA.

The reality is AM is dying in the Boston market - just look at the cume for 1030.

I suspect that WBZ-1030 will be on FM within 12 months - either on 103.3 or 104.1

If they are going with a birdfed format (most likely), I’d like to see them grab TRN’s news network.

LOL, CBS will not be blowing up AMP Radio anytime soon. 103.3 is going to be AMP Radio for the forseeable future. 104.1 on the other hand, it's very possible.

I'm wondering if CC is going to let the talk format linger on for a few months as is...simply to capitalize on political advertising leading up to the presidential election. Once the Republican National Convention wraps up, there will be an onslaught of RNC and superPAC money flooding into conservative media outlets. Talk 1200 may already have buys lined up, and they can just run spots off the birdfed programming until early November. With the new CBS Radio sports network signing on January 1st or possibly slightly earlier, that might be a good time to grab Fox Sports from the Sports Hub.

Fox would seem to be the obvious choice, but most of us thought 101.7 would simulcast Talk 1200...and we were wrong on that one. I doubt being the FOURTH sports talker in town (once 850 goes ESPN) is going to be very profitable for them, but it is an easy solution for a challenged frequency...just dial it up and walk away.

I saw on another board that Nancy Donnelan (the Sports Babe) is doing overnights on WHFS/Tampa and is set to "soft launch" on some of CBS's sports talkers soon, maybe well before the January 1st debut of the network. That could change the timetable for a flip if CBS corporate forces her show on 98.5 sooner rather than later...but that's IF FSR is the eventual format on 1200, and that's hardly a given at this point.
