1200 to be Urban AC?

Boston Radio watch speculates that Clear Channel will transition 1200 AM to another format when it's power increases. Interesting that Clear Channel would take the Spanish off this one and keep it only on the lame 1430AM signal.

I wonder if 1200 will be Urban AC. Clear Channel is the only broadcaster in town that has any interest in minority listeners.

Wow, from your subject heading, I thought you had some scoop or something... Talk about spreading false rumors!

I guess you didn't notice the question mark.

Clear Channel didn't spend all that money and time on upgrading 1200 to do smaller-appeal formats (including Spanish and Urban-AC), once the signal is up-&-running.

What is interesting is all of the Rumba advertising only includes the 1200 frequency.
There is no mention of 1430. Why would they be promoting 1200 if they planned to change the format after the signal upgrade? I think you will see them see what Rumba can do with a better signal.

A format change on 1430 is more likely.

I'd second everything that you said. A format change on 1430 would be almost definate, as the new 1200 will cover all of the areas of 1430 and much more.

Something is very sketchy too about the website of "La Rumba Radio" at larumbaradio.com, which BRW linked to. First off, the logo appears to be very poorly Photoshop-ed to add the 1430, since it's not even the same font. And the website isn't a CC page, it's instead one that appears to just want contact information... made by a promotions company that made the website for the old "Mega 890/1400".

Given the actual effort that they appear to be putting into Rumba (promotional materials and live jocks, far more than AA ever got), it would be just plain stupid to use the new 1200 to in fact reduce the coverage area of Rumba. Then again, the company turned their back on Rumba Philly in a very short period of time. But whatever ends up on 1430, expect a very low effort... perhaps either "Fox Sports Radio 1430AM" or a Premiere conserva-talk clearinghouse.

Since the promotion efforts of Rhumba-1200 are quite minor, (at least according to CC standards), that suggests to me that it ain't gonna be Spanish soon after the 1200 upgrade happens. My guess: Premiere talk on 1200 and Spanish on 1430. Draw a line from Jacksonville FL to Portland OR.... How many full-time 50kw stations north, northeast or east of that line are airing Spanish? - NONE!

Interesting!
by the way I was listening to a tape I made of WJTO 730 a few yrs back and I must say "Coastal
Maine's Finest" had a pretty interesting music, and prob still does! (I was up in Portland for a day
and rolled tape...)

Premiere talk could be shows like Glenn Beck, Rush, Drudge, Dr. Laura, and Coast to Coast
http://www.premiereradio.com

note they also syndicate Fox Sports Radio. Could they poss. set up "Sports Talk 1200"? (Thus leading
WEEI to have to switch to Sporting News Radio for overnights once it leaves 1510? Or a local host combined
with replays of talk from earlier in the day...?)

I dunno Bob, head down to the east side of JP...there's a lot more cab tops and billboards down there. CC isn't blanketing the entire area with marketing for Rumba, they're going where the Spanish-speaking populace is.

Or a "Sports Talk 1200" could also become a SNR affiliate as well (carrying shows from both networks)

Lots of Spanish folks in Merrimack Valley..... Rt 3, Rt 93, and the north side of 128...who travel into Boston. Some of CC's billboards in that area promote Kiss-108.... but none for their Spanish stations; not that I've seen. - Soooo, just how many "unsold" taxi tops and billboards in and around J.P. do you think CC places 1200/1430 on?

8 years ago CC planned to use 1200 to go after WEEI or as an otlet for their Premiere talk shows. I have know idea what the new management is thinking. But I would be surprised if they didn't give Rumba a chance with a new signal.

I can gaurantee you that you won't see MYOL return to 1430. The demo's audience is just to old to deliever major advertisers. Back in the late 90's AM 1430's numbers were combined with Kiss 108's numbers to make a buy look more efficient. That is why you would hear ads for Junior Jeans at Filiene's on AM 1430. These days they have to try and make each station stand on its own and produce positive cash flows.

I notice a lot of Rumba Taxi tops here in Chelsea. And I have seen quite a bit of point of purchase Rumba material at the cash registers in the local shops that attract Latino customers.

However, I find very few of the Spanish taxi drivers in Chelsea listening to eithier 1430 or 1200. Most often they have eithier 94.5 on or KLB

Why pick up a format no one listens to?

Urban AC isn't small appeal. Come correct. WILD's numbers were higher than lots of the duds out there. Or are you just implying that formats that appeal to white suburbanites are 'mass' appeal and formats that appeal to minorities are 'small' appeal?

Besides, we're talking about AM.

And tomorrow we'll certainly find out where Jammin's ratings come in. My guess is #1 or #2 in the market.

Urban AC IS small appeal, just as is Adult Standards, and Country Gold(in the northeast), and Gospel(excepting south of Maryland).

even if they don't get ratings, sports stations have been considered a good "sell"...even the
computer in a closet ones. Oh, except for 1510, that is :)

Then you must consider WFXX, WBOS, and the River to be small appeal. WILD always did just as good or better than those stations in the ratings. Heck they even bested WBCN once.
