1220 Greece

Back in 2008, radio station owner, and frequent RI board poster, Bob Savage, won the CP for a 1220 AM licensed to Greece, NY. In the early days, he said on this board he would build the station. However, we haven't heard a thing about it in quite some time. So the obvious question is: What Happened? Why isn't progress being made? Did MR. Savage not build the CP in time to meet the FCC deadline? Was he too busy turning WYSL into a platform for his beliefs, in that 1220 became an afterthought for him?

Hummmm.

It is my hope that in posting this statement on this board, MR. Bob Savage will enlighten some of the curious DXers, radio hobbiists, and conspiracy theorists out there in radio land as to what happened to 1220 AM in Greece, NY.

Conspiracy theorists? Where's me tin foil hat!

In reality, a format like what was on WAXC 1460, would make me happier than a lonely rooster tossed into a hen house! ;D

Since the 1220 facility in St. Catharines is now dead and its license revoked, it's not much of an issue any more--the remaining questionas are, 1)what the timeline will be for building it, 2)how tightly will they have to pull the pattern in to the west to protect WECK, and 3)what it will program once it gets fired up?

True oldies, a local variation on the Scott Shannon concept, perhaps?

I'm surprised Bob hasn't been around to answer this directly...but as best I can tell from FCC records, no construction permit has yet been granted for 1220 in Lakeville. I'm not sure what's still holding things up; maybe just general FCC new-AM inertia. I suspect Bob's in no hurry to start the CP clock ticking in any event, given the way the AM band is trending and the state of the economy hereabouts.

At least for now, any CP that's granted will still have to protect ex-CHSC, since it remains internationally notified to the US. As noted in the original thread, that's no big deal - CHSC was so directional away from WECK anyway that there's not much protection needed in that direction from Lakeville beyond what would already be provided to WECK.

It's hung up with Industry Canada over a minor overlap issue occurring entirely over the waters of Lake Ontario (no actual population involved.) I have to find the file on a distant corner of my desk and call the shadowy Canadian consultant to try to break the logjam. To my knowledge that's the only issue holding 1220 up. As Scott has accurately related, there is no actual CP yet.

There may be a few species of fish that take exception to that. They have been a topic of discussion for years now, in other situations :D

@Savage: Here's to hoping you will find that file in the corner of your desk, call the Canadian Consultant, and get the ball rolling on 1220. While I'm sure the regulators are in no hurry to approve the CP, some residents of the DX community in upstate New York are becoming uncomfortable with the pins and needles we're sitting on.

And I understand that the transmitter building is all set for a new unit, and he can use his existing towers and feed lines, and only add one tower to make his pattern work..

Secretly..I think I saw them off-load a big EMT plate reverb unit late at night..and "pssst" they are singing jingles over at Ben Friedmans studio in Plano, TX...

The "DX Community" can barely contain the squealing glee of it all!!

And I know who he can get as an imaging voice guy.....Let's all run to Tom Wahl's and grab a burger and a shake.

I wish there were more people involved in broadcasting today like Robert Savage, Esq. who has the knowledge, talent, and willingness to spend the past 25 years of his life building an AM station from a 500kw day time to a 20kw full time operation which has a sizable audience and loyal advertisers.

While Mr. Savage's nearest competitor was busy decimating its news department and laying off personnel, Bob, to the best of my knowledge, has the same full time staff that he started with back in the 1980s. Those people are loyal to him and more importantly he is loyal to them.

I consider myself very fortunate to know Bob and to work WITH HIM for five years at WYSL. Trust me when I say that Bob is a rare breed. Someone with an extensive knowledge about the business who is also a decent fellow who cares about his staff.

At least Mr. Savage spent his own money to build WYSL and didn't rely on government funding.
As for the format WYSL carries, I find it more enlightening than some stations that seem bent on being the mouthpiece for the Obama administration.

I'm sure Bob Savage does his best to keep his personal political philosophies out of his business concerns. When WYSL first signed on they ran Alan Colmes & Michael Jackson among other left of center and centrists talk show hosts. Bob jumped on the Rush Limbaugh wagon quick and found an audience. Obviously the right wing programing works for him and brings in the $$. I can't speak for the counselor but I would bet if he thought he could do better with Stephanie Miller and Ed Shultz he would air them.
As far as, the cheering section for the Obama administration, I just don't hear it on WYSL, WHAM, WBEN, WSYR, WIBX, WGY, WABC, etc.
Your dial must be stuck on 1520.

I'm guess that VoR is referring to the station(s) he never listens to - WXXI & Co. You know how those left-leaning NPR people are. </sarcasm>.

Calling Dr. Smith, calling Dr. Smith....reply needed on "1220 Greece" topic.

Okay, okay. If I build 1220 and put on a format consisting of Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz and oldies, will that make you guys happy? (Just think of the potential...."here's the Left Banke.." "here's Abraham, Martin and John...." (Oops, wait a minute. Both Lincoln and Dr. King were Republicans. Guess we can't play THAT one.) ;) :D

Weren't we talking about a new radio station in.....umm...Lakeville here?? ???

We sure were...but the OP (presumably the leader of the so-called "residents of the DX community in upstate New York who are becoming uncomfortable with the pins and needles they're sitting on") was talking about some imaginary unbuilt station in Greece. Maybe they meant the country of Greece... :-\

Question for the DX Community: If 1220 again becomes active in upstate NY, shouldn't we also bring back the old callsign WSOQ, which was originally assigned to 1220 kc in North Syracuse?

If I recall correctly, it stood for "Sound Of Quality" and programmed Easy Listening along with FM sister WEZG. Weren't Frank and Beverly Harms the founders?

Well, I made a typo. Whoops. I had read somewhere that the 1220 signal was licensed to Griece. I guess it's Lakeville. But I am talking about that verry signal on 1220 KC.

And, as a DXer who is sitting on pins and needles, I can safely say that it would be cool to have 1220 take the WAXC calls that were on 1460 years ago. (And if I screwed up those call leters, it's because myscreen reader doesn't read them right. Sorry.).

"Both Lincoln and Dr. King were Republicans."

We know about Lincoln (and remember the pre-1877 Republicans were a very different, big government, progressive party, from the party we know today) but as to King, where'd you get that?

I'd heard that myself, and was curious about it, so I once asked Ambassador Andrew Young about it knowing how close he was to King during his life--he told me Dr. King was absolutely nonpartisan, affiliated with NO party, because he felt that was the way to hold EVERY politician's feet to the fire and not be beholden to--or be perceived beholden to--anyone. Those of King's close associates who eventually entered elective politics made another choice and became Democrats, and that was their choice--but King never envisioned a partisan, elective role for himself or directly encouraged it for anyone else.

I'll take Ambassador Young's word for it.

I believe the confusion over party affiliation results from an incident where Dr. Martin Luther King Senior commented that he was going to get a large number of people to vote for JFK and the Democrats after Kennedy went to bat to get MLK Jr out of jail during the 1960 election while Nixon remained silent.

It is that perception perhaps that filtered over into the urban legend that Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican.
