1220 WDYT Update

The Dennis Miller show is shark bait. It's another one of his "projects" that he thinks he can do really well, like MNF or a cable show.

It'll be gone faster than Mayella Ewell's innocence at a Soul Train music awards ceremony.

Would love to see Dennis succeed, but like so many other who try radio but aren't in love with it, he will not last! The roadside is littered with comedians, politicials, etc. who thought radio would be a breeze! Frankly, those who truly succeed in radio have it in their blood. Those who think it is a stepping stone to something else need to think again.

The road kill list:

* Al Rranken
* Maurio Quomo
* Mary Matlin
* Newt Gingrich
* Allen Derschwitcz (?sp)

The list if certainly longer ... but you get idea!

At least they got smart and opened the streetside studio downtown. When Jon and Liz are on, there should be plenty of eye candy.

Of course I'm talking about Jon.

heh heh.

No proven track record for ratings or local revenue. If course, Franken is history (going the way of that other crowd of people who thought radio was easy).

I interviewed his royal highness in '06 and his "intelligence" just kept getting in the way.
I see why Air Amerikkka had checks that went boing boing.
Good luck to Minnesota and God help them.

Here's an update from the Charlotte Observer:

No offense, but who cares? You can't even hear the station.

Yeah, because we KNOW how well the alternative is run.
Oh, wait...that was sarcasm on my part. Sheesh, I hate it
when I do that.

Not a huge fan of WBT myself, but let's examine:

WBT: 5.8
WDYT: 0.0

How bad could it really be run if they're high in the ratings and WDYT isn't even showing up?

Talkshows are all well and good but what it really comes down to is: NEWS. If there is a big local story, who are you going to turn to for information WDYT or WBT? The big 1110 has resouces that are no match for WDYT. Plus WBT has been here since the dawn of radio. So I expect that unless they can stick it out and keep running for a long time with small ratings WDYT will join the list of stations that tried and died. It's very difficult to start a new AM these days.

Remember guys, it is not always about ratings. I might be about trading out groceries and a car! That's the way they did it in the dau!

It happens to be one of the FEW things that actually works in the land of
"anything goes" (Asheville) . As long as you don't mind the smell of armpit,
it's a great place to re-examine what life without toothpaste can be.

And as far as the quote someone made about me, I think it was misconstured.
The "alternative" I was referring to actually WAS Air America, not WBT. BT has
been on top for a long time and it will take a huge impact from more than Danny
Fontana to take much of a bite.

Just my 2 cents (ain't truly worth nuttin')

Doesn't look like 1220 is going after 'BT to me- the programming focus is markedly different. I suspect they can peacefully co-exist. There are several different music formats in the market, so why should one size have to fit all in the talk arena?

Air Amerika didn't make it because it was just plain bad radio...roughly half the U.S. population is liberal, so lack of potential audience sure wasn't the problem.

Liberal or conservative I think the talk stations overestimate how much listeners care about politics.

Mike

I read in the Observer article that WDYT would have Bill O'Reilly from 1-3. I see that WZRH also has O'Reilly. Would this be a conflict?

None of the syndicated shows are above changing stations when the deals renew! Particularly if they can get a live clear.
