1240 WLLV

K-Love (also on 95.3 in Morganfield) was off the air at my last check late yesterday. Not sure of the reason.

Which K-Love? I take care of the 91.5/Seymour station that feeds the Louisville area translators and to my knowledge, it has not missed a beat.

The one on 95.3 in Morganfield (WEZG I think) :)

Ever since the ice storm, WLOU-AM 1350 has been unable (or unwilling) to change its phasor into nighttime pattern at sunset. They're staying on daytime pattern at all times. I believe that, without an STA to cover this variance, they're in violation of Section 73.1350 of FCC Rules...the section number's just a coincidence. Usually, I lose them entirely at my home in the Phoenix Hill district just east of downtown Louisville at sunset, but for the past few days, they've had a very usable signal all night, in simulcast with WLLV-AM...with NO legal ID's airing, by the way. And while driving across town to dinner last evening, WLOU didn't null out in the usual spots.

I remember back in the 1980's, WLOU used to illegally stay on daytime power and pattern well past radio sunset to try and blunt the effect their severe nighttime pattern nulls had (and still have) on their coverage area. This was a blatant attempt to negate the signal (and programming) superiority of Urban AC competitor WDGS-AM 1290. A nightly warning call to their announcer would usually scare them into reverting to legal operation.

whatever happened to the 1290 license? was it returned to the FCC?
I used to listen to the old top-40 WREY 1290 while in high school in the late 60's...I was the only one,
and won lots of contests (usually free 45s). Also...the old WMPI 100.9 was top-40...using the phrase
"super psychaledic stereo". I vaguely remember a "John Michael Rothburger"...or something similar...and LOTS of reverb.
Truly awful presentation, but a listenable FM signal...even near Iroquois Park in the south end. And the WKLO-FM simulcast
on 1080/99.7 was cool...the hits in mono on FM...you could actually hear the highs!

Five hundred-watt directional daytimer WREY changed calls to WDGS about May, 1984 for a Black Gospel format. It changed format to Urban AC in June 1985, gaining a "critical arrray" (closely spaced) nighttime authorization at 1kw in November, 1985. Despite the very good programming and presentation, very poor ownership practices sent them dark in October, 1987 (after a return to Gospel in late '86).

The license was quietly transferred by the bankrupt (Argie) Dale Broadcasting Co. to a BBH&H Broadcasting outfit out of Alabama, who owned the license when 1290 KHz was deleted from the frequency allocations for the Louisville, KY-IN market sometime in 1991. To this day there is negative speculation about the handling of the license asset and whether BBH&H was a shell or sham company formed to shield Dale Broadcasting assets from the Clark County, IN sheriff.

I think its a shame that either 1240 or 1350 or even 970 couldn't become a news outlet to complete with 840.
970 is the only one of the 3 that has enough signal to pull that off.

WLOU (1350 kHz) is at it again...running daytime facilities and power overnights in violation of their license. Who, if anyone, is running this WLOU/WLLV combo? The lack of routine transmitter and audio chain maintenance is beginning to deteriorate both stations' on-air sound, too.

I'm assuming that Golden Door/Davidson is too busy unraveling the previous mamagement's entanglements, and day-to-day operations are suffering. They've got very good contract engineers, but I suspect they're not being listened to because they speak the unhappy truth about the stations.

They're cruising for a bruising from the FCC if someone who knows radio doesn't get in charge and make positive operational, technical and programming changes FAST!

I was just in contact with the Chief Engineer of WLOU, and he said he knows for a fact that WLOU has been operating properly at night. You are apparently mistaken.

With all due respect, I've been in radio and TV for 30 years now, and I know when a station is out of parameters. I awoke a couple of mornings ago at about 0445 and heard WLOU booming in at my home, right in the middle of one of their many nighttime nulls, well before radio sunrise. Someone, either forgetfully or intentionally, didn't switch to nighttime facilities. A signal strength meter confirmed the fact that they were at daytime power.

As good and as conscientious as their CE may be, he/she has to keep hammering home to the programming branch that they must observe the rules.

This just in...am hearing from very reliable sources that, now that the Golden Door purchase of WLOU/WLLV/WTUV/WTUV-FM from Davidson Broadcasting is about to close (a couple of routine extensions of time for the closing were filed with the FCC), Peter Davidson is about to bounce most of the staff for new management, replace most of the air & operations staff, re-locate the facilities to a much more suitable studio/office complex Downtown with re-built studlos and modern equipment (with full automation for live-assist and unattended operations), with other upgrades. Even profesional imaging packages will come to the stations. It's about time!

Sounds like they're FINALLY ready to move those stations from the '70s into the new century! Understand the formats will stay the same, but they'll sound so much better so as to be "light years ahead" of their current sound. Even the phoner shows and listener call-ins will be properly screened, switched and delayed through a new Telos system for all three (WTUV AM/FM are usually simulcast) audio streams.

Sure hope this comes to pass...I'm sure Davidson didn't sink $3.36 M into these 4 stations to continue to get what they've been getting.
