1250 ESPN vs. The Fan: The Winner Is...

Bob Smizik has ratings breakdowns for both sports stations' morning, midday and afternoon shows:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-g...g/23950-and-the-sport-talk-ratings-winner-is-

''From 6 a.m. to 10 a.m: 1250 ESPN had 2,300 average quarter-hour listeners and 23,300 cumulative listeners. The Fan had 1,600 average quarter hour listeners and 34,600 cumulative listeners.

''From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: 1250 ESPN, 2,800 AQH; 27,900 CUME. The Fan, 2,300 AQH, 30,000 CUME.

''From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.: 1250 ESPN, 2,600 AQH, 28,700 CUME. The Fan: 1,900 AQH, 41,100 CUME...

93.7 The Fan's got more listeners, while 1250 ESPN's listeners (at least up until last week) are just more loyal than those of The Fan.

For as long as I've been alive, when one participant in a contest throws in the towel and quits, then the other guy automatically wins.

I notice the CUME numbers for music stations are much higher than those for talk stations.

Just a guess, but in my listening habits, I tend to listen to talk at home, where I leave the radio dial on and work on the computer or cook dinner or whatever.

When I'm in the car, I may listen to music, but am constantly changing the dial trying to find a song I like or avoiding commercials.

In this case, I have to believe the CUME of The Fan is boosted by listeners in their cars doin what I do, which is jump around.

Thoughts?

Just a thought on the whole thing....for those people who were ready to bury the FAN less than a month after it's birth, THE FAN is sitting pretty right now. DISNEY could not afford to get into a shooting match. They have been losing money for years, could not find a buyer, had a payroll with no returns and realized a poor signal, 5 thousand watt stick just wasn't gonna hack it. The FAN strategy reminds me of the USSR vs.Reagan in the 80's. The Soviets realized they just didn't have enough Rubles to fight it out. And to the victor...possibly Stan and Guy? Imagine if the Fan had Ellis and maybe Madden in that lineup? Wow, VICTORY!!!!!!!!!

People keep referring to 1250 as a poor, weak signal. It's the second best full-time AM signal in the
market, behind KDKA.

It's true that 5,000 watts on AM isn't 50,000 watts on FM -- but then, it was never designed to be.

Keep in mind that CBS has been deploying FM sports talkers in several of their markets, so it's not like they're in the game to take out established AM sports talkers - just impact their revenue and sales somewhat... For example, in Boston, where they run "The Sports Hub" WBZ-FM, WEEI is not going anywhere (except perhaps FM?) for quite some time. And in Baltimore, CBS actually owns a sports station on AM and FM (also called "The Fan"); the AM station is largely ESPN bird-fed programming.

You are correct when you observe that 1250's poor, weak signal is the second best full-time AM signal in the market. It doesn't much matter how many watts a station has on the AM band, being stuck on the AM band in 2010 is still not a good place to be.

I am coming around to this way of thinking more and more. Driving around in recent months I am struck by the increasing amounts of noise coming in on traditionally decent AM signals (1320, 1410, the ones we always listened to music on back in the day) as I drive by various buildings. Can that many people be splitting atoms in their basement?

I'm not sure about splitting atoms, but I suspect there is a lot more cutting of the cheese than their used to be. That's probably the real reason for global warming.
