1250 WDAE QUESTIONS(HELP)

Hey Guys:

Could you guys help me with some questions about 1250 WDAE:

1. Was WDAE ever Top 40 in the late 70's early 80'S before going nostalgia?
I saw in the 1979 yearbook that WDAE was listed as Top 40. In the 1981 yearbook it was listed as AC/Talk. I always thought is was AC/Talk.

2. Was WDAE ever country or classic country "Froggy" between 1994 and 1997?

3. Does anybody know the exact date WDAE went to sports in 1997?

4. Does anybody know what date WDAE went to nostalgia? I am thinking 1983 around the same time WJYW went WIQI.

Thanks for your help on these questions!!

Are you writing a book? How interesting. Can't wait til it hits Barnes N Noble to get a copy.
Or, are you filming a movie? Let us know. I want to pre-pay for tickets online.

RADIO geek squad:

There used to be a radio site called "Tampa Bay Radio Broadcasting" which had a extensive info on the history of all the stations in this market. IT WAS A GREAT SITE!! It is gone now and I am trying to get a massive amount of correct info to put together a new one or two page site with this info on stations its format and history of each station. There is no place on the internet to find a complete history of Tampa Bay Radio stations past and present together. A book might be a great idea too. If you have some history to contibute it would be very helpful.

Thanks T.J.

RADIO geek squad:

One more thing I wanted to say. I would also like to contribute my info that I find to other sites like "Radio Years" or to other people who would like to start a site like it. Do you know much about the radio history of Tampa Bay? I could use your help. Plus I really like radio history sites. I find them very interesting on how they can bring back memories.

Thanks
T.J.

Hey Tanner:

I remember you. Yes I am doing Tampa now. I finished Miami and I am having friend of mine put the info on a web site. My West Palm info still has a lot of holes to fill. Especially on the AM band. I just got some more info recently on WPB AM stations from back issues of broadcasting yearbooks that I found on the internet. I don't want to put anything out yet till it is complete.

Thanks for asking.

I totally forgot about WDAE being "Froggy 1250"! I wish remembered exactly when that happened. I think it was probably when Gannett still owned it. I think 1250 was still simulcasting 100.7 when Mason Dixon took over that station in the summer of 1996, so it was sometime after that I think. When Jacor took over, 1250 began simulcasting "Thunder 105.5" right up until the time when 105.5 upgraded from 3kw (or was it 6kw?) to 50kw which was late 1997. It was at that point that 1250 became "The Sports Animal." Of course my memory could be a bit off on those, but that's what I recall.

1250 WDAE was more of a Hot AC from when I was there in 1979-1983..When TAFT (Randy Michaels and crew) bought the station from Rounsaville they kept it as Hot AC..until just after they moved to the "new" studios at Reo Street. At that time WYNF (Y95) was on the FM side..and 1250 was on the AM side. The station really sounded great..and I loved working there..One morning I got a call that the station was going to Nostalgia under then PD Larry Anderson. I left shortly before the switch to do mornings at 620/WSUN.

The only airchecks I have of that era is on my old aircheck reel that includes

1250/WDAE
WMGG "Magic 96" (95.7)
WFLZ (Oldies Z93) and VERY early POWER 93 (Power Pig)
WYUU (U92) 92.5

Jeff Laurence
WLCY, WDAE, WSUN, WMGG/WNLT, WPDS (Paradise 93.3), WFLZ, WYUU, WCOF (Coast 107.3)

yow...that was fun

Thank you Jeff for that info!! It helped me out a lot. Just a couple of questions for you:

Would you know exactly what date WDAE went nostalgia?

And were there any talk shows on WDAE when you were there because in one of the yearbooks WDAE was listed as AC/Talk.

Thanks again for your help Jeff!!

I'm not Jeff (no where near the pipes) but I remember Mark Champion with a sports talk show from 6:30 to 8 and John Eastman from 8 to midnight at least during '79 and '80.

One of the first talk shows on in Tampa Bay was the Talk of Tampa Bay" Stan Majors was on around 1977-79 and had so many people "after him" that he put stones on the hood of his car, and made his board-op go start it for him before he left. John Eastman did the "Talk of Tampa Bay" at night..Don Beckman did all nights..his was a hybrid AC format with live call in from all night listeners..Later a guy named Jay Bortz did the show with his wife as board-op (that was after the station was bought by Taft and relocated to the "new" Reo street location. So it was, indeed AC-Talk. Mark Champion did "Sportstalk", and is now the voice of the Detroit Pistons.

Shouldn't forget Rosemary Haddad who, I guess, followed Eastman as host of "Talk of Tampa Bay."

Desperate and Dateless...

Jersey Jim you are so RIGHT..I totally spaced about her. Nice nice lady, and she did a great job with that show..anoither Randy Michaels invention..and it worked well for 1250 back in the day
