1260 AM Power

Has anyone noticed a signal decline recently on 1260AM? It seems weaker recently.

I didn't think it was possible to degrade that signal and still actually hear it. Of course, with a full directional signal pointed straight out to sea, many fishes, whales and sharks can hear all of Saul's latest format changes very clearly!

Actually it covers The Valley quite well, because it was intended to be a local station for this area. The extra watts that were added when the city of license, but not the transmitter site, moved to Beverly Hills do mostly cover the Pacific Ocean. I don't notice any drop here but there were rumors about them putting in HD equipment so they might be making adjustments requiring them to drop power. Those rumors gave me reason to think that they might be going back to music, maybe Classical, but then they put on a local talk show at mid day again (John Ziegler) so who knows.

Forgot to mention that I did notice that KYPA blanks them for a distance coming out of Union Station on the Metrolink train going toward Burbank so that might mean that there are some areas nearer to the KBLA-1580 site where 1230 has also moved their transmitter where 1260 is now being interfered with more than before.

We are heading into the driest time of the year. Not exactly great for ground conductivity.

Are you sure they haven't added HD already? When station's add HD, it distorts the analog portion of the signal.
It sounds like there is a hiss in the background and creates a "tinny" sound. The sound gets worse on highly
directional station's. The best way to tell if it is indeed the addition of HD "technology" is to turn the dial to 1270
1280 and 1250 and 1240, if you are getting a loud hissing sound that blocks out anything audible on those
frequency's, than HD is the reason. If you don't notice this they are probably just doing some tower work.

If you are not familiar with HD radio, I would suggest that you scroll down to the "HD RADIO" boards on
Radio-Info, it is very interesting and informative on the subject.

No hiss on 1250 or 1270. I get it from 690 to 730 from KSPN, and on either side for KFWB-980, KNX-1070, and KDIS-1110. If KGIL was in HD it would because I am so close be like KSPN and wipe out 20KHz up and down from 1260. KFI and KABC have apparently dropped the IBOC as they both had it for a time but no longer.

KGIL sounds ok audio wise but I get front end block or overload from 1230 on the train between Glendale and Downtown on my Sony Walkman radio. That is the only degradation I've noticed. The directional pattern from KGIL drops sharply East and South toward East LA and El Monte and always has. If you look at their pattern on Radio-Locator.com you can see most of the power is going South Westerly out over the Pacific. Of course the dry conditions could affect it somewhat as suggested by another poster above.
