1280 Stockton to Spanish

From Bill Mick's newsletter:
Friends, we told you you would get the word first. That's true, even if
it is not the word many would not like to hear.

Starting tonight at midnight, KWSX Stockton becomes La Preciosa, a
family friendly Spanish Oldies station that serves our Spanish speaking
neighbors and businesses very well.

This is simply a business decision that has been made in order that we
continue to operate profitably on this station.

I had heard that this may happen, so it looks like it will be true? As for its switch to Spanish, I am not sure if it will be profitable? David Eduardo has always said Spanish on AM is not that profitable.

In my time driving through the area, I noticed that KWSX was nothing more than a translator for KFIV. The station sounded very Modesto.

Of course there are those who would say that Stockton AD revenue is low. But, if a Stockton based advertiser bought time on say KOSO, wouldn't it count as Modesto AD revenue. It seems to me that the problem with Stockton is *weak* local radio. Most of the listening in the Stockton market is listed below the line (outside of the market...esp. Modesto).

Now KWSX is a translator for KMRQ-96.7. ;D

Just another temporary format for 1280 this will be another wasted signal, why listen to 1280 when 96.7 is just fine and in stereo too. AM radio is DEAD! Want to save a buck and make a buck at the same time? Just turn the transmitter off and throw it away!

1280 For Sale!

Well according to David Eduardo on the Hispanic Programming board, KWSX-1280 switch maybe a temporary move by Clear Channel to sell the underperforming radio station. But the question is, Who would be interested in buying KWSX? 1.) The LaRues? Owners of KSTN-1420/107.3. This would be sweet revenge by them. During the 1970's and 1980's, 1280 and 1420 were Top 40/CHR rivals. Who can't forget the KJOY-KSTN feud? 2.) Or how about "Threshold Broadcasting", owner of Smooth Jazz KRVR-105.5 and Adult Standards KVIN-920. 1280 could be an excellent translator of "Vintage 920 The Vine"? 3.) Citadel? I doubt it unless they want to simulcast "ESPN RADIO 970 KESP"? Great use of that "Stockton Ports" package. 4.) I think an excellent use of 1280 is for Clear Channel to sell it to a Southeast Asian group. Stockton has a large Hmong population but without a radio outlet. Fresno has one, Stockton should too? Any other guesses?
