1290 AM WCHK broadcasting in English

Just tuned to the 1290 am WCHK in Canton while riding around there. Saw someone outside the studios. There have been multiple cars there the last 2 weeks and looks like someone has been working to get the station updated.

They appear to broadcasting a national talk show now (4 pm edt Wed. 9/16/09) that is in english. Seems to be a conservative show, but I did not catch the name of the show.

Has this station finally changed hands? Will listen some more, but you guys may want to tune in to see what they will do.

The station is doing the Jerry Doyle Show afternoons from 3-6 pm and America's News mornings. In between its still spanish. Its the same ownership who is trying out some english programming to reach out to the locals since the station upgraded its signal to 10K watts.

How about HS football? They have some semblance of a night signal in Canton and Woodstock.

Yes, they are apparently doing HS Friday. One of our graduates was hired to do pxp.

They need to return the Sunny 100 Oldies format back to WCHK-AM where it was simucast with Sunny 100 formay years. Is Scott Evans still the PD of CK??? Are Jumpin Jack Reynolds and Bob Bailey connectedwith the rborn WCHK. Is old website back up a runing?

Hmmmm. Lets see, won't happen, no, no, no, and no. That about answers all of the questions.

Any further word on what this station's ownership group is looking to accomplish with their upgraded signal and recent programming moves?

John Allan, why are you so down on WCHK? You were a main force on there (and Sunny 100) for alot of the early-mid 2000`s. Why don`t you want to see WCHK and Sunny 100 reborn with the Oldies that were so popular there? Davidson Broadcasting DID bring back Oldies to WOLT-FM in Greenville, SC about two years after they bought it. They killed Spanish and brought back the Oldies that had been killed on that station back in 2001 when Entercom ran it. Doesn`t Davidson own WCHK and Sunny 100? I think they might kill the Spanish format.

I believe WCHK is owned by Greg Davis and Davis Broadcasting.

WCHK is owned by Davis Broadcasting who also owns LaRaza that is now broadcasting on 100.1 and 102.3. The station recently increased its power to 10KW from Canton. The station is selling "block program" in both english and spanish. They are running Cherokee High School football on Friday nights; America News with Washington Times in AM drive and Jerry Doyle from 4-6 pm. The rest of the time the station is spanish music.

Hmm. Conservative English talk and Regional Mexican doesn't sound like a particularly appealing combination.

Is Patron really putting the hurt on La Raza? Or is it simply poor ad sales on what is essentially a pair of local stations? Remember WAZX just folded altogether (at least as a pair of Latino stations).

I would imagine a Patron move to 105.7 would absolutely kill La Raza. I would guess that 105.3's poor Gwinnett coverage and 100.1's reach all the way to Dalton is what is saving them for now. 105.7 would negate both of those.

GT&8O may get his wish and we may yet see the return of Sunny 100 and Lake 102.

I heard Americana on the station last Weds - mid morning. Bluegrass and country tunes - good ones too - just like they used to do.
I helped do the measurements for their power increase. While we did the measurements we ran the old format - I really enjoyed all those hours listening to that great music(There's nothing better than bluegrass when you're drivin' round the mountains.....)
I'm not sure how well the old format did ...... if I liked it then it was probably not very profitable. But I would like an Americana format in Atlanta. DAVE Roots is psuedo- Americana but is too Rock flavored for my taste.

Patron on 105.7 makes a lot of sense but it would not put LaRaza out of business as there is always room for a low cost provider for niche formats like Regional Mexican. They would have to program it as local and different from what will no doubt be a "corporate" sound on Patron. CC would also raise the rates sky high on the remaining station as they will try to recoup the billing on VIVA and local advertisers will balk and run to LaRaza.

LaRaza does very well. Their spot rates are far more than they should be based on their signal and ratings. But they get those rates. Plus a Gwinnett County breakout shows them at #1.

Pero, ¿es numero uno para escucharlo a trabajo?

Does anyone remember how the original WMLB (1170, out of Cumming, before Corey bought them to take them dark so they could up the power on 1160) did? I remember there was a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth among Americana fans when they went dark.

Then this station should give shortwave a try. Then again, maybe not.

This group should seriously consider getting back into the market of local radio programming, complimenting whatever "block program" elements it can get! If the signal is strong enough during daytime, there's enough talented broadcasting vets out on "waivers" from this region, that could use this station for a platform.
Offer bartered time, or even pay a small sum for salary, and this station could have a better than small market feel to it. Not much, yet something that region could benefit from.

Yep....I remember the 1170 operation - it was a great station - one of the first stations to coin the "Americana" slogan for that particular mix of rock/country. They were somewhat cutting edge - I say somewhat only because as an AM you're not really sticking your neck out on the block by offering this format. There was a FM - I think in Charlotte - that was Americana and did well for a while. It soon became too rock flavored and people quickly lost interest - I think it only lasted a year or two.
