1300 says bye bye to "Freedom"

When i owned stations in Ecuador some years ago, I got a letter from the FCC saying that my HCFV1 was operating "off channel" on 805 kHz and telling me to fix it as it was interfering with WGY in Schenectady, NY.

In fact, HCFV was licensed to operate on 805 kHz by the government of Ecuador.

AM DXers were (and still are) quite grateful for those "split channel" stations.

Decades ago quite a few Latin American AMs operated on such frequencies. Costa Rica actually had 25 kHz spacing (525, 550, 575, 600, 625, etc.) which made many of their stations relatively easy to hear in Texas--I recall stations on 675 and 725 in particular. El Salvador had one on 655 which also came in quite nicely. And many DXers will remember Belize on 834 kHz. None of these stations caused any real grief to U.S. broadcasters, the distance being too great--but fun DX for those with good receivers and a knowledge of where to look.

I rechecked the info and found I made a slight error in my earlier post....TGLT in the FCC DB is shown as a 10KW Day and Night...one 1/4 wave tower at 309.4 mV/m/[email protected] THINK thats from the latest FCC data but could be from 2010...let me check the data of the file and if its old, I'll rerun the program with the latest AMData db file from the FCC's FTP site...IF TGLT is not on the air or is improperly notified to the FCC, time for KSET to look at an upgrade in place....(BUT not sure if the day pattern would be allowed at night...the North lobe at night is considerably lower than than the day lobe...even with the reduction in TX power, it does not add up....and there are more nulls at night...which made not be required during the day)

some corrections

Let's get a few things straight about the "who" part of the KSET posts.

.As to 1300, actually, Tom Clay was one of those behind the Freedom 1300 format. (nope, The format was created by Chip Darby, Tom just handled the paperwork and getting the stuff on the air. He was NOT station manager under the last format....and was NOT the one who came up with the "win a gun" contest, you can credit that to Chip Darby as well. Lee Melton was the station manager in the KSET version, but had nothing to do with Freedom 1300. He doesn't own one of the bars on Crockett Street, he promotes comedy shows, but he does not own anything. Melton and the original staff busted their butts to create the station, and the demise of the station was not due to the actions of the staff at the 5550 Eastex location. The station went off the air not because of Bill Hill's health (though it was a contributing factor) but because of personal money problems that Mr Hill had. KSET left several advertisers with their money taken up front and no ads run on the air, but Melton and Clay had nothing to do with that, and Chip and Tom offered EVERY one of the advertisers that had not gotten the ads the opportunity to run the schedule they had paid for, and most of them took them up on the offer. Several did not.

..There were several local attempts to buy 1300 while it was off...but bank financing fell through.

Clay was never involved in any business dealings regarding the station and Melton NEVER got a LMA done where they were able to put the station back on the air.

The Freedom LMA was done by Chip Darby. He bought the equipment and rented the studios, but was never able to get a deal in place with Bill Hill regarding the purchase of the station. A problem that Melton had as well, nothing on paper. Jerry Proctor, a radio broker in Livingston also has his hand in the station, and was in business with Bill Hill on LPTV ventures and was the broker of record for the sale of the Silsbee AM/FM to Bill. The owner is shown as Proctor-Williams, Inc, a company 100% owned by Bill Hill. The mailing address is the family home in Port Arthur on Avalon where Bill Hill and his wife lived for years Bill NEVER lived in Silsbee. He owned 101.7 before selling it to Cumulus for couple of million but his wife's cancer wiped all the profit out from that...and obviously the writer of the post doesn't know Bill or he would be aware that Bill Hill suffers from congestive heart failure and COPD and lives over near Texas City. Hill's son did start to buy the land the towers are on, but didn't feel it was a good idea to continue to pay for them, so they have been foreclosed on by the owners of the land.

As for what now with 1300, there will be litigation, and it will go on for awhile. The information posted by ContinousWave was all either second hand gossip or outright lies. You now have the truth. And if you want to confirm it, ask Darby, Clay, or Melton...they will tell you that this is the real story.

Just clear up a few things that ContinuousWave stated that are incorrect about KSET, Tom Clay was not behind the creation of Freedom 1300 format, credit that to Chip Darby...and he was NOT station manager under the last format. that was Lee Melton. Was the PD of the first version of the talk station and did not come up with the "win a gun" contest, again that was Chip Darby. Lee Melton does not own one of the bars on Crockett Street, he does promote comedy shows at The Gig on Crockett. Bill Hill's health was a major contributor to all of the station problems, he suffers from congestive heart failure and COPD...And while the previous run of KSET left several advertisers with their money taken up front and no ads run on the air, the Freedom 1300 folks offered to run all of the contracts, and most of the folks took them up on it, with only a couple of exceptions. As to the transmitter site I assume that you meant Chester from Crockett (RIP).There was a local attempt to buy 1300 while it was off...but bank financing fell through. Tom Clay and Lee Melton NEVER got a LMA, or even tried to get one done after the station went dark the first time. Jerry Proctor, a radio broker in Livingston also has his hand in it as a broker. The Proctor-Williams, Inc name is 100% Bill Hill the mailing address is a house in Port Arthur on Avalon where Bill and his wife lived. It was her family home. Hill never lived in Silsbee Hill's son does not ownsthe land the towers are on, it was foreclosed on by Val Hickman, the original land owner and it has not ever been paid for. So that is the true story, and trust me, I know all the players in that game. No doubt by reading the posts by ContinuousWave, he is a connected engineer and knows quite a lot about whats going on, so just thought we should set the record straight on what has been a sad situation for all the folks involved. There is more, but most of it is family issues, and really doesn't need to be aired in a public forum such as this. Clay and Melton and Darby have all been taken advantage of over the course of this fiasco. Proves that you should really have a lawyer draw up paper work before you get into bed with ANY radio station owner....

Then WHY did Tom Clay CLAIM on his FB page and resume to be Market Manager and Morning Drive personality at Freedom 1300? The current web site (now Freedom1350) and the Freedom format is on 1350 Jasper....with Clay running it....AFAIK, Darby has nothing to do with it....I understand there was a falling out between Melton and Clay......(and Lee and his now ex wife, Theresa, divorced during the downtime of 1300.....Lee, according to Clay himself, had presold and taken cash from advertisers for the original KSET operation....and that was a stumbling block trying to get 1300 back on the air...as those advertisers wanted their money back or the ads to run......which would have taken a month to clear out the back log...not good when you are trying to restart a dead AM).....I went on what was TOLD to me......IF it was incorrect, wasnt my fault...I took info from several sources I thought were honest....but now do not believe half of what they say.
What I have seen is a lot of everyone being taken advantage of....or more than others at times...but there was a lot of BS and backstabbing/lying in the whole deal.....wish someone would buy 1300, fix the power/pattern at night (and try to get more day power as well) and do a classic top40 format...which I think would work with the large amount of baby boomers here....

BUT what do I know? I've only been around radio for 40+ years......
