1310 coming back to (immortal) life Dec 17

From the press release issued Nov 12:

Immaculate Heart Radio announced today that the Federal Communications Commission has granted its application to purchase 5,000 watt KXAM AM 1310 from Embee Broadcasting, Inc. The station is licensed to Mesa and the signal reaches the greater Phoenix metropolitan area from that location. The new call letters will be KIHP – for Immaculate Heart (Radio) of Phoenix.

“We are very excited to serve the Church in this way by bringing the best Catholic programming from around the country and around the world to Arizona,” said Immaculate Heart Radio president Doug Sherman. “The transaction will close soon and we will launch the station on December 17th with Bishop Olmsted ‘flipping the switch’ to turn on the station and begin our broadcasts. Soon after that we will begin local programming, including The Bishop’s Hour which will highlight the great work of the Church and laity in the Diocese of Phoenix, and give Bishop Olmsted an opportunity to use the radio to reach his flock.”

Good to see 1310 coming back from beyond the grave. How fitting that 1310 should become a Catholic station when the transmitter is located on sacred ground at the Mesa Cemetery. Maybe 1310 will take back their dumped programming from the Lumberyard and give them some new names. Change the "Positive Side of Sports" to the "Pope's Side of Sports." You could also rename "Culinary Confessions" to "Gluttony Confessions." On top of that, maybe they'll give us some Notre Dame Fighting Irish football like the Catholic Channel does on Sirius XM.

In all seriousness, it's good to have the big 1310 back on the air. Welcome back! 8)

No thanks, I did Catholic hell from k-12.

Thankfully, I could outrun the priests.

Actually the relaunch of 13~Ten finds the station listed as "non-commercial", so don't hold your breath on hearing screaming car dealer ads or mattress sales. We imagine there will be constant appeals for keeping the stations of IHR going as well as fund raising drives within the diocese. The good news is they won't be bending the rules on non-commercial "commercials" like KNAI ochenta ocho punto tres or playing headache inducing accordion music!

Woah woah woah... a religious station on the AM dial? This will certainly be a revolution to the entire Amplitude Modulation spectrum! Mind you, I do have some trepidation here; this could start a trend when someday there could actually be too much of this "good thing" on the AM band... nah, that will never happen... right?

Don't forget 1010, 1280, and 1360 in Engish, plus 1150 and 1540 en Español.

And what above The Blaze (ASU) at 1330. Just as they were getting settled in.

If KHIP--oops, KIHP--decides to install I-CRAP on 1310 (and perish the
thought!), then 1330 is somewhat toast.

Even without the sideband hash, 5kw at 1310, 20-khz away from 40 watts at 1330 would reduce their listenership to ASU's campus. Of course KASC's signal wouldn't cause any interference to KIHR. Like I said yesterday, before my post did not get through, KASC belongs in the expanded band.

KIHP is assigned to a low power FM station in Shasta Lake, CA., also a religious station. Can the same call letters be used on two different stations if one is LP?

Yes. KIHP and KIHP-LP are considered two different callsigns and are in different services. They are not co-owned, AFAIK, but as long as they are not in the same market, it's OK. Just like KJZZ-TV Salt Lake City and KJZZ (FM) Phoenix, or KASA-TV Santa Fe/Albuquerque and KASA (AM) Phoenix.

....and lest we forget KSAZ-AM Marana-Tucson and KSAZ-TV Phoenix.

KIHP 1310 Mesa (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) is on the air
doing apparent testing this afternoon. First noticed at 1:23 PM
with music being segued.

Turned it back on at 1:55 to check the TOH, but between 1:55
and 2:15 I have yet to hear a legal ID.

Maybe they buried it in the :50 stopset. Wait a minute, there
are no stopsets! ;D

Then suddenly at 2:20:05--the carrier is cut ("Gumpdusky-style").

KIHP's new nick: "Lumberyard Jr." ;)

Sounds a lot better than Graveyard 13~Ten  Of course once that cemetery lease runs out in a couple of years, they'll have to pack up the twin towers and move elsewhere.

I'll bet that, with their budget crunch, Mesa will figure out a way to extend that revenue stream for another 10 years!

dunno...unless more people buy into vertical planting, the Mesa Cemetery needs that land. The Nurse Czarina and I think diplexing with KMIK makes a lot of sense.
